Despite the lyrics of this song saying otherwise about his name, Doctor Sausage, aka Lucius Herman Tyson, was born March 7, 1912 in Brunswick, Georgia. He went up the coast to New York City in 1936, by 1937 was performing under the moniker “Sausage and His Tramp Band” and by 1938 Doctor Sausage had his Five Pork Chops.
On Mach 19, 1940, they got to record for the Decca record label (which would ultimately be their only recordings), and in that session recorded 4 songs, including this one. The members of the group as of August 1939 were Lucius “Sausage” Tyson, Alrick Myles, Earl Hope, Harold McFadden, Gerry “The Wig” Wiggins, and Joseph Carroll, though most sources only credit Tyson and Wiggins, leaving the rest of the group to speculation.
Tyson had gained a reputation for being a Chameleon of music with the propensity to change and blend styles to meet public demand having dabbled in Jazz, Blues, Shuffle, Swing, some songs bordering on novelty style music. Sausage went on to great success with his later bands, particularly “Doc Sausage and His Mad Lads” who scored a #4 hit on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart with “Rag Mop” and by 1950, had made it to #18 on the Billboard “Top Selling Rhythm and Blues Artists” category.
