DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – A Nightmare On My Street 1988

  • The first time I ever heard this track I was driving home from work and as soon as I heard the first few seconds I couldn’t believe my ears. The Elm Street melody weaved into the beat really caught me off guard as an 80’s horror fan, because I had no idea until then it even existed!

Since then, this track has become a Halloween tradition for me. It’s waaaay better than the Fatboys track “Are you ready for Freddy”, which I also hadn’t heard until after I stumbled onto the music video for “Nightmare on my Street” on youtube and began to dig around for more Elm Street inspired rap.

Nightmare on my Street is such a fun video. Being cheesy, of course it never takes itself too seriously. I can’t help but bump it every Halloween season. It’s truly a shame it wasn’t used by New Line Cinema, who chose instead to try and wipe all existing copies of the track out of existence due to copyright. But it still lives, proving that like Freddy, you just can’t kill it.
