Technically you can, the inputs are the same. There are some crazy videos out there of incredibly skilled gamers playing difficult games using Rock Band setups, Donkey Kong bongos, or all kinds of ridiculous home made nonsense like fruits wired into the inputs so that you have to lick a banana to register a keypress.
