Great photo! Transportation to a vibe and time I never knew..
Great photo. City Island is a bit of New England in NYC
I was a teen in the 80’s and still remember pay phones being everywhere at the beginning of the decade and pretty much a rare thing by the early 90’s, although I think they did manage to exist until 2000 or so. I think the last time I used one was in 1999 at a rest stop off an interstate because my “car phone” died on me.
there are so many cool things about this photo: staying on her bike while on the phone, riding barefoot, her tanktop, her hair, the way she’s posed with a foot on the bar and the way her hand is poised. and from her expression i just bet it’s a cool convo too. i love this photo, thanks for posting.
There were color photos in the 80s
Sadly, she couldn’t do that today.
There was a Stephen Colbert show a few years ago where I think he chose a young girl from the audience and they went outside to one of the remaining phones like this on the street. He gave her a quarter and asked her did she know what it was and how to use it. She basically didn’t. Things not only change but change SO FAST.
You still see them at airports and bus terminals and things like that.
Love it!
This is a spectacular pic
You know how people will say that they can smell or hear a photo? I can feel this one. Barefoot summer on a bike, the concrete sidewalk and glass and metal edge of the phone booth…
In 1980 the world’s population was roughly half of what it is today.
Great photo…as a child from that time, I can appreciate everything about it; makes me sentimental.
Bikes were thinner back then.
I love this image. Something really calming about it. Especially for New York!

her name was Diane, eh? in the 1980s you say?
5 bucks says the guy she was talking to was sucking on a chili dog outside the tastee freeze
As someone who can barely stay on a bike with two hands this is super impressive lmao
I wish she was talking to me.
Does anyone know where I could buy a print of this?
What a vibe!
Damn sure looks comfortable.
Everything in this photo seems uncomfortable, pedalling barefeet, sitting on the uncomfortable bike seat, the corner of the phone booth digging in her back.
My mom worked at a restaurant weekends on City Island when I was growing up in the 80’s. It was only 4 miles from my neighborhood, but felt like a different world.
