December 1st, 266 years ago today one of the strangest artists in history was born: William Blake. He was a poet, a prophet, a painter, a Romantic, an environmentalist, an abolitionist, and a mystic. The word “unique” is overused, but William Blake truly was unlike any other…

He was born into interesting times, 1757.
According to lore, God was to allow the righteous descendants of Adam and Eve back into the Garden of Eden after being expelled for five and one half weeks; 5,500 years in our time.
In the Gregorian calendar, that was 1740, putting his birth 17 years into the new welcoming of the “righteous”.
It was also the time period in which Baroque music was falling out of favour for the more melodically simple Classical music.
Does this mean those of us alive now are descendants of the non-righteous?
The poem, Auguries of Innocence spoke to me so much, I think I read it in 11th grade English class and I just think it’s so perfect
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour
I am not a big poetry person, but I just love this one
Was thinking about his art this morning. There was a good exhibit at the Morgan Library 10+ years ago that I remember. He was a trip.
Yeah too bad someone ate one of his paintings.
A robin red breast in a cage, puts all heaven in her rage
My intellectual and creative hero. I’ve been inspired by Blake since I was a child.
