[The Shahnameh](https://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/sahnama-excursus) (Farsi: شاهنامه, lit. ’The Book of Kings’), is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet [Ferdowsi](https://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/ferdowsi-index) from Khorasan between c. 977 and 1010 CE. The Shahnameh is one of the world’s longest epic poems and is widely regarded as a literary masterpiece, and definitive of the ethno-national cultural identity of [Iranic peoples](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_peoples).
It mainly tells the mythical and historical past of the Iranian World from the creation of Earth up until the Arab conquest in the seventh century. Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the greater region influenced by Persian culture such as Armenia, Dagestan, Georgia, Turkey, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan celebrate this national epic.
**Note:** The father betraying the son is an anecdote; not a common theme. The Shahnameh consistently emphasizes the themes of succession, a sense of duty, and a son’s obedience to his father; highlighting the importance of legacy and continuity. These are clearly themes in the Godfather as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mario Puzo drew inspiration from the Shahnameh when writing the novel.
