Split is the single coolest city in Europe. If any North Americans think they’ll ever only get one chance to visit overseas, then go to Split. And I say this having visited every country in Western Europe.
It’s living city that has grown up organically over the last two thousand years in and around a massive Roman palace. This is Europe as you imagine it: the markets, the cafes, the alleyways, the waterfront, the squares. And the pizza is better than Italy’s, there, I said it!
(Also, the surrounding islands are as beautiful as anywhere in the Mediterranean/world)
(Also also, if you have a chance to, visit Mostar, Herzegovina (you can pass on tourist-trap Dubrovnik))
