Conrad Veidt in ‘The Man who Laughs’ in 1928. The inspiration for the Joker’s appearance was the character of Gwynplaine in the movie played by Conrad. Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker bears the closest story to Gwynplaine including one of childhood trauma that left him with a permanent smile.

Early on Great character and lead actor.
I actually tracked this and Dr Sardonicus down and watched them.
Hmm. In the 70s, the Joker stole a set of paintings which when placed together formed the lost masterpiece “The Laughing Man”. He then told his gang that he was the original source of that painting.
That being said, the style of the Joker in that era, especially in his own comic, is still my favorite.
