mix feelings i had a fucking blast at 99.. i was also three sheets to the wind and on a 6 day drunken rager soooo.. maybe more memories will unlock as i age disgracefully lol
I think there’s an argument to be made this one event had a lot to do with women largely disappearing from early 2000s alt music scenes, after being very visibly present throughout the 1990s rock and grunge movements. There was just a tremendous sense of disillusionment after it that it felt like nuclear fallout floating around, and Fred Durst’s notoriety afterwards made him kind of an outsized influence.
Fair enough few of the 1990s female featuring- or driven grunge acts had hit the heady heights of Pearl Jam or whoever, but they were *there*. Figures likes Kim Deal and D’arcy Wretzky were always *there*, L7 and Hole were there on stage and their fans were there in the crowds and pits and never questioned it.
After Woodstock ’99, women just sort of blipped out. It stopped being taken for granted that a good chunk of the crowd at a rock show would be women and the bands were all about chasing Limp Bizkit or Red Hot Chili Peppers tails. I really don’t remember many other female led/featuring bands emerging again outside of mainstream pop until emo started really rearing its head.
Maybe not, maybe my memory’s playing tricks on me, but it did feel like a kind of inflection point one way or the other.
The HBO documentary didn’t talk to people who actually enjoyed Woodstock 99. There were plenty who did. Also the way they drew a through line from that to the Trump Era was just flimsy. The stories of assault absolutely need to be covered too of course.
They captured a lot of the spirit of the times and the creator interviews were interesting. But their overarching societal conclusions were a bit of a reach.
Looks solid!
Didn’t see a release date?!?
Didn’t HBO release a Woodstock 99 doc recently?

As long as we get a lot of footage from break stuff it’s gonna be lit
I’ve definitely never seen hours of in depth footage of this most documented concert event. Pass.

Maybe this one will be more measured.

I remember this i was 16 a couple of guys I worked with at the time came back with 4 kegs they stole from the event.
What happened?!? Charging $20 for a bottle of water in ‘99 and all the greed inspired bullshit you milked this festival for, ass hat
