Mouths are hard. I mean that legitimately. If you look close at mouths in any form of art, but especially in 3d and animation, you’ll notice a lot of weird looking ones. It’s the most elastic part of your body and there is a shit load of teeth and a tongue in there, it’s hard to draw and hard to animate. I agree though, that is an unsettling smile.
I genuinely think human facial expressions are the most difficult animations because of their complexity. The amount of muscles we have in our face that are used to convey emotions is staggering and to really model a realistic human face would consume far to much time and computing power. So animators take shortcuts and we end up with unsettling expressions.
Althougb you have to admit, the average facial expression has gotten better over time. So one day we will have the polished product we yearn for now.
In this case it looks like the top half of his face has a neutral expression, while the bottom half has a smile. I think you wouldn’t be able to smile that much without your cheeks pushing up against your eyes.

uncanny valley phenomenon
Well yeah pretty sure the dude in the pic has a second car. A white panel van with no windows and a tear stained grape with a silent ‘g’ mattress🤣
It’s the white people meet each other in the office hallway smile
Its because human nuance is very difficult to pull off in animation. Makes it feel “off” or insincere.
Didn’t realise Mel Gibson was in that game
