This is one of the foundational sci-fi films of my youth. Still quote it to this day! Didn’t have a lot of VHS tapes as a kid, but watched this so many times I broke the tape.
They should do a modern sequel of this movie, where the alien ship comes back and picks up a few kids for an adventure, but this time to explore space/other planets etc.
The prop ship from the film was repurposed as a red spaceship decoration in Disney World’s Tomorrowland. You can still see it today, though only it’s iconic curves are still recognizable. https://themouselets.com/top-10-tomorrowland-secrets-at-walt-disney-world
Captain Disillusion’s intern did a video on that movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyixMpuGEL8
Calling it CGI is potentially misleading. That ship is an actual prop combined with practical effects.

Affirmative
I really enjoyed seeing this movie with my daughter when it was new.
My granddaughter is now nine, so I hope I can arrange to see it with her when the family visits at Christmas.
Thanks for the link, Captain Disillusion’s intern deserves a raise!
There is a decent documentary that celebrates the cult classic film, but also details the troubled life of the child star afterward:

Love that movie.
Visuals were amazing for the time
It sure is a pretty piece of Space Lab.
Made 4 years after *Tron* and 3 years before *The Abyss*.
