Fran Lebowitz paid a visit to the restroom “for less than a minute,” she said in an interview this month. “By the way, there wasn’t a huge difference between the cleanliness of the bathroom and the rest of the place.”
CBGB’s was the loudest venue in the city. I saw many shows there. But the Camper Van Beethovan in 1989 made my ears ring for 4 days. I never went to a show or club without ear plugs after that. The place was super gritty. Hilly was almost always at the door taking/selling tix. My fav thing was no matter what the band was, if you went to the disgusting bathrooms in the basement, you walked by the “dressing rooms” which meant a quick peak at whatever band was playing. The walls were probably 4 inches thick with posters, stickers, etc. Most of those were removed when Varvados took over but you can still see some of it. Def worth a visit if you’re on The Bowery.
The city was a very different place then. I lived in westchester and went into town all the time. Very different energy back then. I don’t miss a lot of it, but I do miss some of it a lot, maybe that doesn’t make a lot of sense but it does to me.
Country Blue Grass Blues
Never got to go there. Regrets. Then again, never really did a night in NYC either :/

I wonder where all these people are now?
I remember those matinees at CBGBs. I was supposed to go see Flipper there one time but couldn’t make it. Fall or winter 1984 or ‘85.
Some say you can still smell that bathroom on the Bowery

“Hey y’all I hear you know how to get us into See Bee Jee Bees” is a line from *American Psycho* that I had minor difficulty reading.
I wouldn’t last 2 minutes in there.
