If you want the tldr: Honda’s F1 team, based near Oxford, spent a lot of money researching the next years car in 2008, only for Honda to pull out amid the financial crisis. The chief engineer Ross Brawn, who was at Ferrari during Schumachers successes, bought the team with help and switched to the Mercedes engine. They had almost no sponsors, no money for ongoing development. They won most of the races in the first half of the year and managed to maintain that lead to win the drivers and constructors championships. Mercedes bought the team, brought in Nico Rosberg and Schumacher as drivers as Button and Barrichello had been snapped up by other teams. It’s a lucky underdog story about hard workers in a field of far richer people and teams.
