The video feels like a full circle moment for a generation
The fuck is the effect on Tom’s voice. It sounds awful good lord.
i should call my old friends.
Jesus that’s just boring. I kept expecting it to do something but no, let’s be sad and talk about nostalgia.
They need to tone down the overproduction, deal with the fact that they’re old and embrace it.
[Hot Water Music](https://youtu.be/q1d4bvpj-pI?si=JqAe7BfSFtUiwYKT) is old, they’re still putting out good music. So is [Samiam](https://youtu.be/Waa9-p3-GUk?si=hQBeqHialRooAFVE), [Bollweevils](https://youtu.be/1D67w6WUSNI?si=0rqVU9LgGTUf-daS), and a bunch of other old school bands.
I love it, but these guys sound more like Boxcar Racer to me.
Was really just waiting for Travis to go ham, but was left disappointed. Not bad, not great.
I feel like if you didn’t grow up with this band, it won’t hit the same, so here’s some context.
This iteration of blink-182 went on “indefinite hiatus” suddenly in 2005, a couple of years after releasing what is widely considered their best record. At the time, they were legitimately one of the biggest bands in alternative rock. The split was, to put it mildly, messy. Reportedly, Tom (the guitarist) wanted to take a half year off to spend time with his family, but afterward wanted more time to explore other creative endeavors, and Mark (bassist) and Travis (drummer) were understandably frustrated that Tom kept delaying his return. Eventually it led to Tom just leaving. He’d spend the next few years researching aliens and starting the band Angels & Airwaves, and eventually it would come out that he was struggling with an opiate addiction at the time after getting prescribed Vicodin for a back injury a few years prior. Mark and Travis formed a side project called +44. Those of us that grew up listening to them in our formative years were gutted, but we tried our best to enjoy the new music instead.
A few years later, in 2008, Travis and DJ AM were in a plane crash. Out of the six people on board, they were the only survivors. Travis nearly didn’t make it – he was in intensive care for weeks, had several surgeries and blood transfusions. To compound things, not even a year later, DJ AM overdosed on hard drugs that he started using again due to the PTSD from the crash. This led to Tom reaching out to reunite with Mark and Travis, and they got back together to record a new album and go on tour again in 2009. However, the album was more akin to their side projects, and the reunion didn’t really last – Tom wound up leaving again at the end of 2014. The vibe just wasn’t the same within the band – nobody was really on the same page, everyone had different priorities and visions of what they wanted to do musically, and they fought a lot behind the scenes.
Mark and Travis had enough and decided to just replace Tom with Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, and they recorded a couple of albums together, while Tom went back to doing his own various media projects and getting UFO hearings in front of Congress. He also went through a pretty nasty divorce in 2019.
Then, in 2021, Mark was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. He went through intense chemotherapy treatment and eventually came through, announcing he was cancer-free at the end of that year. The whole ordeal was enough to bring them back together again as friends first without the pressure of being bandmates at the same time, and Tom rejoined the band again near the end of 2022.
So now, this song – it hits us who have been fans through all of this differently. We understand the context. It isn’t just sentimentality for nostalgia’s sake, its real. It’s cathartic and raw and emotional and a long, long time coming. It’s a song for us, and more importantly, it’s a song for those three men, finally agreeing to be brothers again and be real with each other. It’s essentially a love song for each other.
Hug your local blink-182 fan because they probably cried a lot today.
As someone who listened to dude ranch 500 million times in my discman when I was 13 or so this brings no nostalgia.
*After growing up with these guys, I am fully comfortable enough with myself to say this music video made me cry. What a trip*
Masterpiece is a really strong word to describe something so mediocre.
We’ve got Travis Barker but let’s not use him.
Anyone else thought it was kind of boring?
Meh
Blink was easily my first favorite band ever. I appreciate most genres these days but pop punk was my absolute jam. I remember having their pre enema CDs and just jamming the fuck out. It’s wild how long it’s been since hanging with the fellas listening to Blink and Less than Jake. I still talk to several friends but many of us grew apart. Those were the best times of my life. I was so happy with the 2 releases today. My cat passed away earlier this week and I just can’t keep my shit together. This helps a little bit.
masterpiece lmao
I really wish they didn’t auto-tune like that. I want to hear their imperfect, human voices.
Maaaaaan, the production on these two songs are rough. I dig the sentiment of the first one, even if the song itself it just kind of fine.
EDGING really grew on me after a little, maybe these will too.
This is really cringe imo. Would’ve been cool if they put out an actual pop-punk song, a banger like Josie or Dammit. The lyrics here are like some teenagers diary trying to be all deep lol
I think we can appreciate the history and context of Blink without deluding ourselves into thinking this is any good.
It’s so cheesy, and Tom sounds weird, and it’s auto tuned.
But it truly is touching. I remember listening to enema of the state with my friends when it came out, and when downloading became a thing, downloading so much blink 182 songs and videos. I changed the family computers theme to a Blink182 theme at one point.
I’m glad these dudes are back together ❤️
The band sounded anemic here, Travis didn’t even get to do anything.
The meaning behind the song is there but there’s no emotion, such a dead sounding song.
“Masterpiece” ya reckon
hmmm meh
I love Blink-182. They were a special part of my youth.
But my guy, your definition of masterpiece is worryingly loose.
I wish Jerry Finn was still alive
Mark Tom and Travis Show still holds up.
“You have giant boobs and I doubt you’re 18.”
“Put those 14 year old boobs away!”
Wow what just hit me? Heard the song earlier today and wasn’t all that impressed. The video though….
Hits the feels, ngl. Also shit I’m old now.
Every generation wants to relive their youth.
Nostalgia is a bitch
I’m not even anti autotune, it can be used in crazy and artistic ways, or it can be used subtly to great effect… but then there’s this, that legitimately just feels cheap and lazy
So glad to see the boys back together. I saw them live back when they reunited the first time and it was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever been to.
Masterpiece? this song is very mediocre IMO. Blink 182 was great. They should have just left it at what they had released already. there is a lot of video from their current tour that shows they really are not into it. Such a boring live show and it seems like they are just doing it for the money.
Even in this video they don’t seem very into it.
