“Blackadder Goes Forth” has the best ending of any show. Gut punch for any show never mind a comedy. Aired 1989 but spoilers…

From the ridiculous to all too real in the space of a few minutes, I can not remember anything having as much of an impact.
And to think it came from them trying to rescue a terrible original take
I remember watching this as it broadcast and waiting for some Bladderesque punchline…but it just ended on the poppies and the piano version of the tune. So poignant and all the more powerful for being the definitive end of the show.
Fantastic series. I always thought that it was so unjust that Rowen Atkinson was known more for “Mr. Bean” than “Blackadder”.
Few series have had a finale this perfect.
I remember sitting and waiting for the punchline to happen. And the horrible realization that there wasn’t one. I’m still sad, thinking about it. But it was a perfect ending to a perfect show.
“Thank you, Darling”
I can never decide between this, MASH’s or Avatar’s. It’s one of the three.
I always enjoyed that the “cunning plan” running joke setup was tied in to it and subverted.
This is good. The ending for the Dinosaurs sitcom gives this gut punch a run for its money as well.

This [making of the final scene](https://youtu.be/hbR9-etyN6I?si=nOnMAoUKllEhvW1z) is worth the watch too. It’s only 3 minutes long.
What they did with such appalling material to wring an ending out of is truly brilliant.
I remember reading that the original edit was really not all that good. I’m pretty sure I saw it in a documentary where they all lied down and “pretended to be shot”.
Thankfully, lots of editing, slow motion, music and a transition to a poppy field made it one of the most iconic endings of all time.
O What A Lovely War has a similar vibe to it. Very light and very dark. Well worth seeing the movie.
They really needed to turn off the silly laugh-track for this episode.
