Ground breaking. The 5th element of add-ons. Mind-blowing vibratory engagement made us all think our hoverboards were just around the corner. So damned immersive.
Yep, came with Star Fox 64.
I remember reading about while GoldenEye 007 was being developed, Rareware was going to implement a feature that allowed you to reload your gun by removing the Rumble Pak and inserting it back into the controller. To simulate reloading a magazine.
Would have been interesting. A little impractical, but the thought was unique.
Βack in that day all you needed to do was to power on the console and play in 60 seconds flat!
I was so hyped as a kid when my parents bought be the rumble pack. Good memories
The controller never felt right without one.
I remember finding holes in the ground in Ocarina of Time with the ‟Stone of Agony”
Only the coolest kids….
Rumble and that other pokemon game accessory!
As a kid, I remember feeling so cool clicking that rumble pak into place.
Once you got a taste for that rumble pack the controller was not the same without it. I would leave the dead batteries in just for the weight.
Back in my day it just had 1 button!
First experience was inside Target with the SM64 demo on display. Never forgot the moment when Mario hit the ground with his ground pound and the controller shook like crazy.
RUMBLE PACK GOES VRRRRRRRR…
Came with Star Fox 64 right? What a great game!!!
You either get rumbles or you get memory card.
Ah yes, back when Nintendo loved the word ‘Pak.’
Rumble Pak
Transfer Pak
Expansion Pak.
Fun times.
I remember being mind blown when I got one of these lmfao.
Back in my day you had to buy an accessory to SAVE your damn game!
I played through the first few worlds of gex 3d so many times trying to progress before I had to turn the playstation off haha.
I would put the rumble pack on my balls when I played star fox
And now I turn off vibration.
What’s hilarious is from the ps3 on I have disabled it to get more battery life
And batteries.
The rumble pack needed batteries.
Rumble Packs!
I’ll never forget being like 12, and reading a review of it in an N64 magazine, and the guy writing the review said something like “also, we got our staff member Lucy to sit on it and she seemed to like it”. I remember thinking, “huh… I don’t know what that means”. The 90s were weird lol.
*Laughs in PS1 controller*
Everyone knows the Rumble Pak, but has anyone here heard of the Jolt Pak?
It’s a Rumble Pak with a 3.5mm port that produces sounds instead of vibrations. What’s the point, you might ask? It connects to a pre-amp, which connects to a cushion [or backpack called Aura Interactor](https://i.imgur.com/LPGkYU8.jpg) that would then vibrate with the power of 50W. Instead of the controller vibrating, your entire upper body does. It’s utterly amazing.
This sonic transducer still works with PCs and consoles today, by the way, including VR. If not connected to the Jolt Pak, all you have to do is mirror the audio, e.g. by using an HDMI audio extractor, a second 3.5mm port on your device or similar. Any game, movie, type of music just works. Explosions and gun shots rock your seat, the vibrations of an engine or the road surface can be felt, you can physically experience individual instruments (especially drum and base).
I really can’t imagine consuming any media with sound without this device anymore, a device that is decades old and cost me only a little over 50 bucks used.
The only downside is that some of the audio bleeds through, since the sonic transducers in the backpack or cushion really are just two big old speakers, so it’s best to be used with headphones.
There are modern solutions like this that are much sleeker and don’t suffer from this particular issue (or at least not as much), but they cost hundreds more – and I’m perfectly happy with what I got, so I see no reason for upgrading.
Rumble pack falling out from the final explosions on Star Fox.
You didn’t tell them about…
The rumble pack, did you?
Rumble pack was the shit. Star Fox was practically a vehicle for haptic feedback wrapped in a fucking good game. I can’t count the number of hours of sleepovers my friends and I spent on this.
Incidentally, every time I see the rumble pack, I’m reminded of some edgy column writer reviewing it in a gaming magazine at the time. Came in with the classic line “‘yeah, shoot me again, baby…’ with rumble pack against groin”
Having to make a choice between saving your game and rumble support, ugh, lol. At least Starfox had save support in the cartridge, but games like Madden didn’t have the save space.
Then when you bought Donkey Kong 64 you got the graphic upgrade insert for the actual console. What a golden age of gaming.
Let’s get ready to ruuuuumble!
first thing i do when playing a game with a controller is go to options and turn vibration off.
That Starfox 64 promo VHS made me realize the FUTURE
…back in my day, there was a vibrating PS2 peripheral for Rez so my controller didn’t get wet.
Remember putting that bad boy on your balls and letting it rip?
No fucking way 😂 today years old lol I never knew what that was for as a kid
“So I attached a rumble pack to my controller, which was the style at the time.”
The biggest downside to this, you had to choose weather you wanted to save your data or have the rumble feature since both ran in the same slot.
Back when they still thought we had three hands
I missed the N64 days so much. Four of us playing golden eye after school, everyone screen sniping, scream and having a great time. Then we smoke weed and go to Jack in the box for some jalapeño poppers.
Just like your girlfriend
Ya know, that damn controller port was versatile lol. Rumble pack, memory card, and my personal favorite….The Pokemon Stadium attachment that let you connect your Blue/Red/Yellow Game Boy cartridge to Stadium and let you play on the big tv instead.
Glorious.
Only if you were a Nintendo kid lol
Or to save
Back in my day we had to type the entire game code in, line by line, from a magazine.
Sheesh these youngsters…
When I was a kid, I lived in LA. On the day I got my first rumble pack, I threw it on and was playing in absolute awe of how amazing it worked. The rumble in your hand made the game so much more immersive and 8 year old me was loving it. I had just put it on, felt it a couple times, and I thought it was super weird that my entertainment center and my bed also started shaking. I thought HOLY SHIT THE FUTURE IS WILD!!! My mind was absolutely blown. Then, my mom started yelling at me from two rooms away to get under a door frame because there was an earthquake. With all the confidence in the world, I replied with, “No mom, it’s just my new rumble pack!” She ran into my room and got me to safety. To my disappointment, it was indeed an earthquake.
From time to time, I find myself thinking about that feeling though. Few things have ever hit as hard as the moment I thought Nintendo had reached some god level technology through a rumble pack. It was peak childhood wonder and excitement for the future. I wish I could bottle that feeling up and sip it when I need a pick me up lol
Now I just use my Parkinson’s.
Cell phones needed one too. They wouldn’t vibrate without a special battery.
