Who else remembers that one time Sony revolutionized the game industry by adding thumbsticks to their controllers?
I found a copy of the original Gran Turismo at a yardsale this morning and the instruction manual was in pristine condition. I saw this add on the back and the nostalgia consumed me. I suddenly remembered when these were announced back in the day and thinking “pffft, this is just a gimmick that won’t work. I’m sure I’ll just use the d-pad anyway…”

Still have mine
I remember when I was a kid, I HATED the joysticks. I couldn’t get the hang of them.
I tried playing Crash recently with the d-pad like I did as a kid and could not figure out how my 10 year old self ever used it lmao
This was simply amazing when it first came out.
Although the implementation was a bit hit and miss, it was soo cool to use.
Dual shock was horrible
We are so lucky and thankful that sony joined the video games industry.
Who remembers the N64 rumble pack?
I loved this controller but to be real, this was Sony just adding the features from the n64 that Sony was lacking. An analog stick and rumble. Ultimate I found the dual shock way more comfortable than the n64 controller though.
My girlfriend bought me my first dual shock controller back in 1998. I’ll lever forget that controller… or her for as long as I may live.
Colin McRae Rally was where this truly came alive.
They went absolutely mental when you wrapped it around a tree.
A design so good that it went relatively unchanged for the following 2 console generations 🙂
I remember the special edition red control and memory card that came out. Those were the bees knees.
Sucks going back and noticing how long it took most developers to stick the camera on the stick instead of L1/R1. Even on ps2. Lol
Immensely satisfying
I remember playing Penescape the first time using dual analog. It was so different than everything before.
There was an analog no-shock pad for a little while before the dual shock. It was amazing for people with big hands as it was something like an inch wider.
Nah, go back and watch a vhs from your childhood and tell me the coming soon trailers and random Burger King Kids Club or Pizza Hut baseball team commercials don’t nail you right between your nostalgias.
Wow 98 Im truly old
I remember never knowing what L3 and R3 were.
