It’s very impressive how much percussive force is generated just from the firing, as shown from the house shingles falling off in droves. I imagine that firing those big guns feels like being punched repeatedly after a full day.
ww1 seems like such a nuts period, where industrialization made mass-production of artillery and shells feasible (and other war supplies) yet tech wasn’t at the point where it was precise, so it was just round-the-clock wasteful explosions.
This movie is a masterpiece. I am so glad I went to see it in the theater. The transition from old black and white film to the restored variant is jawdropping. They even showed it in 3D which just made the whole experience even more intense.
And despite all the “action”, what I remember the most are all the faces looking directly at the camera-lens. Hiring lipreaders and then having voiceactors give all the soldiers a voice was genius and was the cherry on top that truly makes this movie stand out from all other WW1 documentaries
I know a lot of VFX was done on this film, does anyone know if the shots in this segment had explosions added? It’s just odd that nobody (not even horses) reacts to many of the shells landing
Thankfully if the warmongering idiots who are pushing the Ukraine proxy war get what they want, we should all be gone in a flash of nuclear annihilation instead of endless shelling like this.

The whole movie is worth the money to rent. It is a sobering movie.

This might have contributed to Grandpa’s hearing loss.
I’m glad that this was the last war the world had.

Something about seeing it all in color just makes it feel more real.
Thanks to saber ratting dipshits in the year 2023, some version of this might be all of us again soon.
