Note: this song is actually a prayer because the lead guy Speech lost his grandma and brother within weeks of each other
Great song but mr wendal was better
Excellent song, taking me back to junior high
It wasn’t exactly co-written by Prince. They sampled a Prince song, so Prince got a writing credit.
They’re fantastic live. If you get the chance to see them do it.
My friends raged on me pretty hard for buying this album….
A GAME OF HORSESHOES!!!!
There is a difference between co-writing and being given credit for co-writing.
In this case they sampled a song which means credit was given. But prince did not write the song Tennessee any more than led zeppelin wrote the songs Rhymin & Stealin or She’s Crafty.
Love this band
This song is still a hit!
Man, ya can’t unhear it 🙂
Was in the military when that came out. One day we were in a CO’s briefing. Karl Shelby (RIP) leaned over and whispered into my ear, “Tennessee.”
MF almost made me bust up laughing.
One of my top 10 songs Of all time.
Does this count as “D.A.I.S.Y age” rap?
I fucking love this song, I used to have the tape cassette and I replayed it over and over until the tape got eaten lol.
Mr Wendal was rad, too.
But I am still thirsty
I played this CD at least a thousand times. I played their follow-up twice. Sharpest decline in listenability between albums I’ve ever experienced to this day.
I’ve never heard this song before.
one of my all times favorites, i know this by heart .
sincerely a deep prayer in song with so many layers.

Love this tune
Great album. I have it on vinyl
This song got a lot of play sophomore year of college. Saw them live at Mt Holyoke College in 1994.
I own two hip hop albums:
– 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of…
– Because the Internet
Him?!
Holy shit, Reddit, did we just do an entire thread mentioning The Purple One without the usual and oh-so-very-tired copypasta?
No wonder I’ve always liked it. I played this for my wife just the other day as she had never heard it.
I am still thirsty
Well it wasnt cowritten by Prince, exactly. it just has a sample that they never cleared. So instead of sueing, Prince said give me co credit and a good chunk of change. And AD obliged, bc Prince did like the song and he ddnt want to make a spectacle about but AD, like anybody else who samples, has to give credit and pay.
This line is just so powerful: “Walk the roads my forefathers walked
Climb the trees my forefathers hung from”
The funny thing is that it’s a bit confusing. Is he rappin or singin? Nice song tho.
It’s a shame that violent, mysogynistic hip-hop became the popular form.
I always preferred Fünke’s 100% Natural Good-Time Family-Band Solution
Had no idea it was co-written by prince, cool song that came out at the same time as a lot of great music did
Bands original name was timex social club, but had to change it because of timex law suit…if im not mistaken.
