anytime i move, first thing i do is scope out where im going to have to string my long ethernet cord to get to my desk. now i just say its because i am working from home, but really its for my gaming pc
I just bought a house. My PC is in the rec room in the basement, modem and router are upstairs in the office.
I was agonizing over how I was going to need to have a cablego all through the house and downstairs, when a friend said “just drill a hole in the floor”.
That blew my mind. I’d always rented before now. But this was MY floor, I can drill holes in it if I want. Thunderous revelation.
OP seems irrationally angry about the fact that Microsoft gave him two perfectly valid ways of connecting to the Internet, and the method that he chose to use didn’t cost him a penny extra, while the other one did.
For most people, WiFi in 2007 was fucking magic still, and *every* WiFi device cost this much, and most were significantly more. How *dare* Microsoft give customers flexibility and reasonable pricing. What a scam.
We had shitty 2mb Internet so even with one of these my connection would have been dreadful. I bought a 50 meter cable, drilled holes in my room and then ran it around the door frames and down the stairs to the router 😂
50, but yeah. Some networking guy was way too lazy and left the last of the spool while he was making a connection, and that cord lives on with me. Thank you random lazy ISP guy
This was fantastic if you had an original model and wanted to connect to Wi-Fi. They even had a little place where you could latch it onto the back of the console. Later consoles had all of that built-in, but before then, this was the only way to go.
Yeah lemme just run a 100 ft cable through my parents house when I’m 16 where the router was on the opposite side of where my bedroom was…which was downstairs and i lived upstairs…I bet my parents would’ve loved me asking them to do that.
I have a 50 ft Blue Ethernet that lived with my Xbox 360, and I’d take it to buddies houses for lan party’s.
I still use it to this day, and am amazed it still works. My cat used to chew on it, it’s been squished in closed doors, ran over by office chairs… things a beast.
Nope. Hard drives for that where an even bigger scam. They used off the shelf laptop hard drives, and had to be formatted a certain way. Else they would ban you from xbxox live.
Another colossal piece of shit move they would do. If you had Xbox live payment setup on your card, then moved and changed your address, they would lock your Xbox live account for fraud. But WOULD STILL PULL THE MONEY OUT OF THE ACCOUNT, until you told the bank to block it. And their response was always, “you’ll just have to get a new Xbox live account”. Fuck Microsoft.
*edit*
Oh yeah also, you couldn’t watch Netflix unless you had Xbox live. Mind you, you didn’t get Netflix WITH Xbox live. You just couldn’t use the app, for something you paid separately for that worked on ps3, without PlayStation plus.
Like 2 years ago I bought a 100’ cat6 cable dirt cheap on mono price then bought a pack of connectors and the tool on Amazon. I made all the Ethernet cables I need and still have dozens of feet left. So much cheaper than buying pre made cable and hoping it’s not too short.
It’s crazy how much Microsoft would nickle and dime everyone back in the day (they still, may, I’m not sure). No wifi, here is an adapter (just a year later PS3 had a model with wifi and one without), rechargeable controller battery? Extra. Oh cool, Xbox Elite comes out, bigger hdd, still no wifi…
Xbox 360 was great, I loved every minute of mine, PS3 just had so many advantages imo, like Blu-ray, it had the best Blu-ray player on the market for a bit, rechargeable controllers (that is a point of contention since it isn’t removable), larger storage (iirc) at first, wireless, HDMI (OG Xbox 360 didn’t even have HDMI till the Elite). Xbox was something else during that era in terms of popularity.

Yup. Had a long ass yellow Ethernet cable running through the entire house to my room. Ah those were the days.
The second edition one with 2 antennas worked great
I just used my laptop as a WiFi antenna.
I wish my brother and I weren’t smart enough 🙁
anytime i move, first thing i do is scope out where im going to have to string my long ethernet cord to get to my desk. now i just say its because i am working from home, but really its for my gaming pc
Didn’t even know this was a thing
We used to steal wifi from the school down the block with one of these.
Wait, the 360 didn’t have WiFi?
My biggest frustration is that a regular one that you can use for any windows computer doesn’t work. It HAS to be XBox brand. So yeah, ethernet cable.
This worked perfectly fine though? Not everyone wants to run an Ethernet cable throughout there house.
It worked for me. Mom wasn’t letting me put a long ass cord through the house
I also remember the original XBox had a DVD playability function… but you had to pay £20 for the remote to use it. Just as shameless if not worse.
Someone never bought the dial up adapter for the Gamecube for literally a single online game…..
Considering I was a kid and couldn’t run an Ethernet cable through multiple walls in my house this was worth every penny for me.
It worked great for me. Even picked up the signal from a mechanic at the other end of the road. Obviously wired is better but this did the job.
OP your significant other doesn’t agree
*memory unlocked 🔓
Not rly a scam was helpful for a bunch of people

The biggest scam is paying to play online. Imagine if you had to pay a subscription to use Steam
How is this a scam? Did your 360 come with a built in WiFi receiver?
what if someone doesnt have an ethernet cable to do that so they had to use that item
The real scam is that I used that to download horse armor 😒
50, but yeah. Some networking guy was way too lazy and left the last of the spool while he was making a connection, and that cord lives on with me. Thank you random lazy ISP guy
I’m sure a lot of parents weren’t cool with running a network cable through their house to play online video games.
Are you not old enough to remember the NES Power Glove?
My son runs an Ethernet cable 3 floors when he spends the weekend lol
I bought a second modem and somehow convinced Comcast to allow two modems in my house for about a year. I was host of every COD4 lobby.

I think the biggest scam in gaming is microtransactions, especially those on mobile gaming where they nickel and dime people to death.
I feel attacked. I remember going with my dad to GameStop and he bought me this and I was sooooo excited.
I only had a 50ft cable.
But I also had a drill.
I just bridged my Ethernet and wifi connections on my laptop and used it as a passthrough to get wifi on my Xbox. It thought it was hardwired.
Edit: P.S. – I think young me was craftier than current me.
I bought this… also the gold horse armor for Oblivion.
It wasn’t a scam at all, it was a convenient option.
Shit worked great for me
I never remember it being that bad…
BS, this bad boy gave me free internet for years.
I Didnt have internet for a long time.
I’m 30 and I’ve still got a cable running across my house.
I just bought a PS3 to get around this scam.
Yeah lemme just run a 100 ft cable through my parents house when I’m 16 where the router was on the opposite side of where my bedroom was…which was downstairs and i lived upstairs…I bet my parents would’ve loved me asking them to do that.
Still do, a physical connection will always trump a wireless one.
