lol I think ps2 was eye opening for online games. I remember for me it was a game called Cold Winter. It had an online pvp mode and it was extremely well done for its time.
SOCOM was amazing. Controlling the AI squad mates with voice commands was badass af. The bundled headset was perfect for it, with only one ear cup + boom mic. So many hours spent online with that shit.
This was such a great game, but oh how I remember how bad the cheating was in this. From people glitching outside the map to obvious GameShark cheaters that would fly around with fully auto .50 cal snipers.
Fun in the right lobby, but definitely the wild west of online gaming.
You can still play online. Prob around 100+ people daily. No other game has recreated this gameplay for me. Speaks volumes when people found a way to play online through emulators and remote lan services over 20 years later. Game will always have a place in my heart.
this was my first true experience with playing online and I was in college. This game had my friends and I hooked. The thrill of working as a team, holding poistions and choke points, or hunting down that last enemy. knowing that exposing myself could make or break a win if I moved positions. We still talk passionately about the first 2 games today. It baffles me that no other studio has tried to recreate something like this when there’s a billion FPS’s out there.
I’ll never forget the commercial for the online play where a bunch of guys were referring to each other by callsigns and being super tactical playing online. They started up and got immediately bodied by other players and were all yelling about it and it hard cut to a bunch of SEALs sitting in a tent and one said something to the tune of “like shootin’ fish in a barrel.” Teenage me loved that ad.
I played the original a lot, too, had to string a cable across the entire house to get online. My step dad hated it. But he was military and was fascinated by the game itself.
I lost an entire summer playing Socom 2 with random people in a clan. I was ranked pretty high.
It got to the point we would fall asleep talking to each other in closed lobbies.
I have never been better at any game, either, or played a game like that since. There are no regrets here, but looking back, it feels like that was an entirely different person.
Man we didn’t deserve how good that game was at the time

Same. Man I miss this!
That game was such a good game, the movements, the guns , the AI, it was amazing
SCK clan for life! I miss this game 🙁 The best time I had playing on my PS2
Didn’t you need an add on modem for the PS2 to play this online? I swear I remember having one.
Wasnt this the game where you could use voice commands to order your troops around?
Sony buried socom deliberately, and I still don’t understand why.
It needs a remaster for sure.

I was always sad and will remain forever sad that my ps2 never went online to play this. I didnt have the means
Stop, you’re going to make me age into dust
They need to bring this style of shooter back. Idk what happened to squad control shooters
Same. I miss this game and community.

ps2 still the best generation tbh

Wild Smalls 11-3 DG only
This was a gem. I haven’t been able to get into online shooters since.
I also suck ass at modern day shooters so that isn’t helping lol

This is my favorite game all time for sure
Nightstalker or blizzard were my two favorite maps
Ruins and crossroads
Burned sooooo many hours in this with my brothers, good lord I forgot about it.
Was this the one that came with the headset where you could give orders?!! That was the best dam game
The good old days, I will always remember the endless nights of gameplay and addiction to this series
Yes… I want a remaster of this series (minus socom 4… that game ruined any and all chances we get another socom)

Imagine a new SOCOM on ps5 with all of the modernization needed
Shoutout to any of the homies from POT clan on US East. Pistols only, thank you.
