An unknown Māori woman with a chin moko, circa 1890s. These were outlawed by British colonists in the 1907 Tohunga Suppression Act. (I’ve put a bit more info in the comments)

For New Zealand Māori women, the moko kauae, or traditional female chin tattoo, is considered a physical manifestation of their true identity. It is believed every Māori woman wears a moko on the inside, close to their heart; when they are ready, the tattoo artist simply brings it out to the surface
What a beautiful woman. She looks so sad.
The moko is beautiful , but look at those eyes….what has happened to her? break our hearts.
Goddamn British.
Just like that woman on that TV show “ Hell on Wheels”
That poor woman looks so deprived of happiness.
😞
More likely 1860s as that dress looks like something from that decade.
Fuck colonisers. Fuck the brits.
Her eyes and face show that she was forced into that dress and pose. That’s not really herself in the picture
I didnt know Johnny Depp was Maori…
Very similar to chin tattoos in the far north coast of California. Yurok and Hupa tribes
They used to take people’s pictures when they’re dead so I think she was dead when they took the picture
That nose. So perfect.
Think you might find the Brits are not the worst on the planet when it comes to treating other nations like 💩 when they built colonies. Believe the highest fatality rates come from the Portuguese and Spanish, there was a video somewhere that shows the numbers.. can’t blame the Brit’s for everything 🙂
These days we moan about destroying old books and buildings (which we absolutely should) but we never talk about the barbarism of destroying cultures thousands of years in the making, in the name of civilization. What barbarism
