  • The streets were the precursor of Hip Hop, as many of the rappers were inspired by the hustlers, mainly fashion wise.
Run DMC was inspired by street dudes from Hollis and Southside Jamaica. Rakim was inspired by them good Puerto Rican people from Fort Greene. In this case, LL Cool J was somewhat inspired by Alpo.

Alpo Martinez with one of the classic Dapper Dan coats, one of the better ones. It is greatly implied that Alpo was the man who inspired LL Cool J’s stylistic fashion choices that made him catapult into popularity. LL and Alpo were cool and regularly hung out. As you can see Alpo is wearing a four finger ring of his name written in cursive. LL Cool J later got his name written in cursive on a four finger ring, which is clearly displayed on his “Mama Said Knock You Out” album cover. Chuck Born from Mount Vernon, who was also cool with both of them, had the same four finger ring.
