A gangster fed the poor while today Bezos goes to space.
Good year to be a haberdasher.
I’m sure that’s joe Pesci and Robert deniro
They look classy as hell back in the dy.
I’ve seen this photo before but never knew Al Capone funded it.
While the Wikipedia for him entry shows the same pic, the text alongside it says nothing of his philanthropic efforts, and the timing of the kitchen’s opening makes for a very busy year as it is when he’s finally tried and sent to prison.
Notice that it’s not gsregated.
Unemployed people back then dressed better than a lot of office workers do today.
And probably a front for something illegal…still a good thing but…
He is Bad Guy, but does not mean he is bad guy.
I know it was a different time but theres at least a black dude in the crowd so I assume they are open minded people…. but I dont see a single woman? Odd? Not odd? Anyone knowledgeable out there?
Fun fact Capone was the first mobster to employ non Italians. He was very progressive for the time.
That’s Chicago for ya. Still charging a quarter to park, even in front of the soup kitchen.
Damn we’re you just a joke of a man if you didn’t wear a hat back then or what?
The secret ingredient is crime.
Mafia is less corrupt than politicians.
I like that they spell doughnuts the correct way.
Similar, but not nearly the same scale, as what Escobar did for Colombia. Built schools, hospitals, dude was the greatest philanthropist hat country ever saw. I’m not saying he was 100 percent good guy, he obviously did bad stuff too, but one wonders how much of what you hear is propaganda designed to make us forgive the fact that he was murdered by the US government.
As with most things, it boils down to control, and money. The government didn’t want people getting high, and sure as hell didn’t want some foreigner making billions from it.
people like to say USSR had bread lines…..
What a nice guy
Easy way to launder money. Funnel it into a business where you give shit away free.
My great, great grandfather was a police officer in Chicago during Capone’s days. He refused a bribe and was later found dead face-down in a muddy field.
My great grandmother was a young girl at the time but spent the rest of her life without a father.
It’s good to see that he offered soup to some of the people whose lives he destroyed.
Where are any women? Families? Weird..
An interesting part about organized crime in history is that the big names in the underground were often philanthropic and dabbled in a lot of legitimate business and charity along with their shady businesses. It swayed public opinion in their favor.
Free…for a favor.
It’s the Pablo Escobar model. Be a horrible, violent person that does horrible, violent things – but sprinkle in a few highly visible charity projects to keep public opinion from completely turning on you.
I do rather wonder what the reaction would be if a well-known criminal gang did something similar in the current United States. Like if one of the larger gangs here in Los Angeles went down to Skid Row and started handing out food and rented one of those mobile laundries. I’m told it still happens in other countries sometimes, but I think it’s been a while since a US gang operated that sort of PR campaign.
Let’s not get it twisted. Al Capone was still an evil man who had people murdered and destroyed lives. He likely wasn’t doing this for any altruistic reasons.
It doesn’t mean he actually cared – he considered it just good business ….public likes him, much harder to prosecute.
Why did everyone dress so formally back in the day?
“Soup or sandwich? And, how handy are you with a Tommy Gun?”
This was setup for money laundering.
God bless Al Capone, what a nice guy. I bet he’s never do any crimes! Not even measly tax fraud in these struggling times.
I’m seeing where Escobar got some inspiration from.
