I’ve been to Haiti. Before it turned really bad, as in before the massive earthquake. It wasn’t good back then, but it wasn’t completely… sad.
I got a bad case of diarrhea day before heading back to Port au prince from Jacmel, and it was a bus ride without stops for 4 hours with poultry and goats on board. A local guy managed to find a store to buy fresh water before the ride, just out of the kindness of his heart. At the end of the ride they unloaded the goats by just throwing them in a pile on the ground.
We hiked the mountains without being prepared for hiking the mountains.
Walking around in the finer areas of Port au prince, people shouted “blanc, blanc” when they saw us.
We were never afraid, no one was ever aggressive or threatening to us. I felt safe and I felt this was a poor country with good people.
Now it seems to have been dealt one of the worst hands a country could ever be dealt and the people there suffer because of it. Shit.
