I’m sure I’m forgetting other shows that did openings like this but there’s something about that song and those characters that just stay with you.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the show’s premiere.
[Here’s a vid I made, one second from every episode of the series](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/xgjn78/one_second_from_every_episode_of_the_tv_series/)
I love the wistful guitar strumming in the theme song.
One of the best shows ever made, you can make the argument that it is the best
Great show that still feels relevant today.
I learned a couple years ago that was a real song with uh….more than slightly depressing lyrics.

Watching this show infrequently as a young kid even then I appreciated the mix of comic and tragic. I like that about scrubs too.
A rare view of Gary Burghoff’s deformed left hand at 1:03.
God, that show reminds me of my dad. Used to watch all the time with him. Boy I miss him.
Does anyone know any streaming platforms where you can watch this series?
Is there any good anti war show being done now? I can’t think of one.
I may have even watched this when it first aired. My family was certainly watching it every week from very early on. Cool opening here, does a good job of introducing most of the characters.
We used to love MASH in my house. My parents had the series on tapes so there was a special place in my heart for them.
I re-watched some of an episode not too long ago and realized it was like 85% sexual harassments jokes.
I don’t think there are any other tv shows that have reached the age of 50 and are still as watchable as MASH.
Best TV show of all time
It definitely had more of the movie feel, right down to the shoe shine boy song.
Why did it say “Korea 1950 a hundred years ago” at 13 seconds? Is the show supposed to be a flashback from someone talking in 2050? I’m so confused.
My dad was in the Korean war and LOVED this show. It made him giggle and tell stories of his time there.
Aw, that brought back memories. Thank you. Our family’s favorite show, we watched it live. My dad was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, so it was pretty special to him.
I also just realized that Scrubs is definitely the spiritual successor to M*A*S*H.
Fun fact 1 – this is the only time the extended song is played the entire series, used as a backdrop for the establishing shots that open the first episode.
Fun fact 2 – it’s derived from the film version, directed by Robert Altman. He commissioned lyrics from his teenage son because he wanted them to be juvenile for the skit. Altman now says he only made $70k for directing the film but his son made millions from songwriting royalties.
It’s neat how this opening truly and almost comprehensively reveals the essence of the characters and the show.
The aloof pranksters Hawkeye and Trapper John, including their relationships with locals. Margaret and Burns canoodling. Spearchucker Jones fading back. The ever-ecclesiastical Mulcahey. The unserious and philandering Henry Blake. Sexual hijinx. Radar’s sixth sense. Then the montage where everything flips from sitcom jokey to emergency medical and the grim pallor of war.
IA boy gots mad auditory skillz.
I don’t know why, I never really watched M * A * S * H growing up or anything, but the opening music always made me feel very sad.
Is there anything more depressing than hearing this song?
What I am curious about, is how MASH the tv series came after the movie; what was the primary factor in the TV show being as high in quality right off the bat. I don’t know many other tv dramas from around 1972, but it strikes me that MASH seemed to have pretty good production value for the time.
The people running up the hill appears to be a smooth lifting-crane camera shot, there’s tons of extra a whole bunch of small little shots involving those extras.
Its almost shot to film quality.
Incredible opening , just incredible!
Its a pretty memorable way to start the series, which was better than the movie. Although, the movie opening with lyrics was pretty good. I wonder how differently people might have perceived the show if they had kept the lyrics.
The show was originally mostly a sitcom, but it became more dramatic later, so it might have fit better there.
