> the potential for such brutality rests dormant in each and every one of us
Yeah when we hear about soldiers raping and torturing people – those people come back to their societies and just… live among us. They aren’t born with some special gene in some far away fantasy place. It was our boring dumb ancestors who owned slaves, raped Nazi secretaries, or in modern times slaughtered civilians in Iraq or Ukraine or Vietnam.
Also highly recommended is the spiritual companion piece The Painted Bird, which tells a similar odyssey through hell but through very different eyes. There’s also a connecting piece to both films: the lead actor in Come and See has a small role in The Painted Bird which, once you see the end of the former, makes the reality even sadder. Word of warning though, like Come and See, The Painted Bird is incredibly harrowing viewing.

One of the greatest films ever, period, regardless of genre.
I thought this movie brutalized me. Then, I read real accounts of the eastern front….
