oh man, that brings back memories…
You bet your ass I did. And the Voyage of the Mimi in middle school
I suffered through it as a sophomore.
My elder brother had the hardback book of it!
Watched in grade school back in the 60’s.
One of my favourites
I saw it maybe 5 years ago.
Every year from 1st to 5th grade. 1970s
Red balloon. ’87. 5th grade, gym floor. Indian style. None of this criss cross applesauce nonsense. Also, I had an onion on my belt, which was in style at the time. Also the year of the great Mimi voyage.
it’s basically Kez, with a balloon instead of a bird.
both taught me to never love anything, because children will kill it
We watched it in kindergarten, apparently everyone did for some reason lol
Yes. 1980s.
Yes, kindergarten in 1989. Turns out my mom watched it in elementary school in the 60’s too. I tracked down a vhs of it back in 2000 or so after she and I talked about watching it back in elementary.
Soooo many times throughout the 70s!! I have no idea about why this fascinated teachers, or why this was chosen to give the children something to watch.
we got Jot…..
In the early 70s.
Loved it , but why did everyone see it at the time?
I had the book and was fascinated by it. I don’t know why, maybe it was foreign city…I didn’t see the movie until much later.
Watched this a couple of times each year in grade school in the 70’s. I absolutely loved it every time we got to watch it. Just tried to watch it again and I only lasted about three minutes. Makes me kind of sad.
Yep, for some reason I’ll never forget it apparently
I wish there was a site where you could access the old slide show stories they used to show us in the late 70s early 80s
Yes, but IDK why. Probably the teacher wanted a smoke break or something.
One more step and the Red Balloon becomes the dead Balloon.
I did in the 60’s
Parents had this on vhs and we watched it often.
Felt like I saw it 99 times…
Yes
“Ballon!”
Back in the late 70s, our school owned this and Digby, the Biggest Dog. We saw both movies once a year.
I have only seen it once, but I think about this stupid film a few seconds at once a month for the past 30 years for some reason. I have no idea why it is so ingrained in my mind. Maybe it taught me to never love anything because losing something you love is painful.
Yep. Loved that movie as a kid. Also watched Mulligan Stew in school. I know my *food groups, but choose unwisely still.
Edit *
Yes!!!
This movie is part of the reason I became a teacher.
The teacher asked a question after the movie. I was in third grade and responded something to the effect of, “When the balloon died….” and the class bully, Derek (and NO, I did not change his name for this) laughed at me and yelled, “Haaaa ha! Balloons don’t die!!!! Haaa haaaa!” It made me cry, which if you’ve seen the movie, is emotionally scaring in and of itself. The teacher had to give me a hug and she got mad at Derek. (His name is not changed.) She made me feel safe and I was grateful to her for sticking up for me. I thought that she was so nice, but strong to speak up against a bully. Mrs. Goldsmith was a great teacher (her name is not changed).
In our school, girls were started in sex ed a year or two before boys. We knew something was up when the boys and girls were split up for “movie day”. We (the boys) were shown this red balloon movie. I snuck out for a trip to the bathroom and spied through the window (our school had windows next to the doors) at what the girls were watching, and…holy shit.
Yup
I recall watching this in the 1960s on the *CBS Children’s Film Festival* hosted by Kukla, Fran, and Ollie. That TV show featured a lot of award-winning short films for children from around the world, and it was often the introduction for a lot of kids to other cultures.
The Red Ballon in elementary school, Red Asphalt in high school.
Yes. And I cried.
I watched that in a UK primary school in about 1961 or’62.
We watched it every year in French class – 90s
Looks familiar so probably once but have no memory of the story
hell i watched it in the 2000s/2010s
I remember see this on a weekend TV show called “The Children’s Film Festival,” with Kukla, Fran and Ollie, loved The Red Balloon and still do.
Actually, I read the book. My grandparents had it. It was a large book, like a coffee table book, with pictures from the movie I think. My grandmother was pretty far gone with Alzheimer’s, so I read it to her one day.
