These anti-acne washes aimed at teens are so shitty. If you have bad acne, stay away from this crap. Even the modern crap. They dry out your skin so badly, which causes flaky, cracked skin and your body ups the oil production as a result…. it’s a bad product.
Even before the “micro-scrubbers<giggle>”.

As soon as they went “since third grade”, I was instantly 14 again, watching this commercial, wondering why my face was riddled with zits.
This shit didn’t work.
I remember my sister had that stuff and I would use it to become more beautiful. Well, one time I got a bad earache for like a week, finally one of those little plastic balls came out of my ear covered in wax and my earache was gone.
Eye doctor here. I used to remove these from people’s eyes on a regular basis.
ugh that voiceover at the end is that one lady who sounds like she’s on the verge of tears when she reads. They had a whole commercial with her doing the voiceover at one point and I couldn’t stand it.
For me it was the first time I saw the beads in n hand soap. How in the world would that ever get filtered out of the water supply?
you think thats bad? I used to use shower gel that had actual glitter in it during the late 90s. Wild times.
What about macro plastics?
Those were just the first troublemakers. In case you haven’t figured it out, polyester (choose your favorite non cotton, non wool clothing brand) is really just tiny plastic fibers.

Whenever I see stuff like this, I can’t help but wonder what products we are currently using that are basically damaging us.
Most microplastics originate from much larger objects.
The leading cause of microplastics is the oil industry. They leak these things into the ocean all the time and blame shit like this.
I once accidentally bought Dove body wash with exfoliating beads not that long ago. I had to take a towel to remove them as they don’t seem to wash off. Why do they put this crap in soap?

For reference, adding “microbeads” in cleansers eventually became regulated/banned.
Microplastics in our environment largely aren’t from intentionally added products though; they’re a result of shedding from plastic materials (note: it’s not just from plastic straws and packaging, but synthetic fabrics contribute to this too)

Jesus, I remember this exact ad. It’s sad that my brain made space to save this in the deep archives. I also remember using facewash with these little beads, trying to squish them in my fingers and realizing it’s not possible. Amazingly bad idea.

I always just assumed those little things just disintegrated into the water not long after being exposed to air/water.. You could always feel the little “micro-scrubbers” in your hands at first, but quickly after rubbing the soap on your face or body, they seemed to disappear.. I assumed they were disintegrating so quickly.. in reality they were just almost pointless and going down the drain fast.
That stuff went on well into the 2010s.
Damn. I was 9 back then. Still remembered the “clean and clear and under control” and the lesbian tension between them.
Also weird Garnier commercials where these ladies with long hair are saying “YES YES” like they are doing the sex.
