I know its not a good idea, but just how not good of an idea is that? Will it just reduce the lifespan of the belt or is it likely to cause the whole damn thing to catch fire?
Just so people are aware, this is a trick to see if the squeaking/squeeling noise is from a belt or from pulleys (tensioner/alternator/water pump)
If it stops making noise when you do this, your belt needs to be replaced. If you still have noise it’s one of the pulleys making noise.
Edit follow up: If the noise goes away when you do this, you know it’s the belt that is bad. However, on motors there can be any amount of pulleys. Some motors have idler pulleys, which in laymen’s terms means a wheel that a belt is routed around and specifically placed to ensure a belt will avoid collision with another moving part. If the problem doesn’t go away with this trick, ask a mechanic to help and fix the problem.
Edit for my love of my fellow mechanics : Ask someone to help you that has studied how these things work, because you wouldn’t ask a mechanic if you need a cast or brace on your broken leg.
I use soap…because I still use soap. Its purpose tells you if the belt is stretched
If the squeaking stops, new belt usually. If it doesnt.. well, bearings. Usually, but not always, water pump needs replacing.
If this ‘fixes’ the squeal the problem is your idler pulley or tensioner pulley. Deodorant is a petro base and will dry out your belt causing it fail. Maintain your engine.
Ive changed a squeaky old serpentine belt before. Cost me $30 to get the belt at auto store. But holy *fuck* I am tempted to pay $200 for someone to change it for me next time.

Look at my engine, now look at me
Or just properly adjust the belt tension
