Sargent actually painted the shoulder straps later, to mitigate the scandalous reception of this portrait. It wasn’t just the figure in a high fashion (for the time) gown, but all of the nuances of her body language. The art critic paparazzi were mesmerized and scandalized by the impression of strong independence and force of will communicated in her posture.
At least put an NSFW! I’m on a college campus here, trying to get me fired???
Also the name of a series of Cadillacs starting in 1931- the V16 sedans with the raked back windshield.

Love it! I enjoy his work immensely and got to see an exhibition at the LA County Museum of Art once. Also saw Richard Thomas at the same event. John Boy is much shorter than I would have expected.

This portrait served as inspiration for costume designer Jean Louis when he designed the famous black dress Rita Hayworth wore in Gilda.
An image of Hayworth wearing the dress was posted on the first nuclear bomb to be tested after WWII. The bomb was also named Gilda.
Jean Louis also made the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang Happy Birthday to JFK at Madison Square Garden, and that Kim Kardashian briefly wore at the Met Gala earlier this month.
I know this is only tangentially related to the actual painting but it was in my brain and I had to get it out.

Yes, I’ve always loved this portrait and its history. What gets me hook, line, and sinker, is – seriously – her nose. Just plain gorgeous.
My favorite artist. His work with differing shades of white is fantastic. I seem to recall that originally the gown was strapless?
Sargent was so great at capturing the spirit of his subject! If you are ever in Boston try to visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum-Sargent’s El Jaleo is hanging there in its own gallery!

This is one of my favorite pieces!
That was the second version of that painting. The first one had her shoulder strap drooping and resting on the side of her arm. Today’s money, Sargent would be getting $90.00 for a full size portrait.
I believe this is at the MET. It’s stunning in person. I actually love the whole room this painting is in.
I love this painting so much because it looks SO modern but timeless. She could be in literally any decade in the 19th, 20th or 21st centuries and she would be fine.
I think this painting was part of my bi awakening lol along with Laura Dern in Jurassic Park
