All these game companies now done either made so much money they just dont care anymore or the company is about to go broke so they make the most “realistic” game ever but all the damn features they added dont even go along with each other that the games just break, we will never have a good gaming era like we had from ‘88-2016. We have to hold onto our gems brothers
I used to have Nintendo Power issue 10 and the following 10 years all the way up until my freshman year of high school. My awesome mother threw them all away while I was in the army.
Infocom used to pack a lot of stuff in their boxes. The HHGTG text adventure came with stuff like a microscopic space fleet, peril sensitive sunglasses, an all-purpose ball of fluff, and no tea.
I’m pretty happy when companies take the time to digitize these things and still leave them bundled with the games. Shoutout to GoG for doing this particularly for Arcanum which has an amazing manual that even includes a banana bread recipe.
I used to go to block buster and collect them. I always gave it to my moms and hide it for me from the employee. I used to read the whole thing before I played the game I got.
Damn this just reminded me I have a whole bunch of manuals and maps stuffed in a cardboard box in my attic
Think my favourite was Red Dead Redemption (the first game)
And now we have Google and YouTube tutorials to help you out. Better for the environment

My favorite game of all time
Nowadays you get a piece of paper that tells you how to install Steam.
Gets annoying every time I get a new switch game and it has the lil holders for the manual but no manual.

And headsets!
I really want to get Adam Ellis’s Fever Knights book to wallow in the guide book nostalgia.
Really awesome game too. I remember it had the headset you could give commands to your team members with.

I’m so glad I found this post.
I just found my old GameCube copy of Boba Fett: Bounty Hunter, and was delighted by the manual.
Socom 2 was my favorite. I miss it. My favorite was Sandstorm Breach
I remember the first Super Mario Bros one. Had information on all the main characters and enemies. Good times.
I forgot about socom I loved those games
Something to read in the car while you are on your way home to play it for the first time
Socom-a nuts
The absolute best was Ultima Online with the cloth map, and thick instruction booklet. Man, I’d go back to that time anyday.

I also miss SOCOM
This is such a good fucking game
Ahhh Socom 2. My absolute favorite PS2 game. I must have sunk hundreds of hours into that game.
I wish it would come back.
Truedat
Same here
Greatest game of all time right here for me
God knows how many hours I put into it
I had all the Metal Gear Solid game manuals and had a huge book strictly made to be a full on guide plus more of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
The halo reach one was my favourite
You mean those same days of no in-game tutorials?

I think I have Wing Commander 1’s manual-disguised-as-a-future-military-magazine somewhere.
However for glorious “so big you can smash giant bugs with it” manuals, I think of:
1. Simcity 2000
2. Homeworld
The Infocom Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy text adventure came with an entire space fleet.
