Was it usual to have only 5 horses in the race? I read it’s 12 max but that’s rarely met.
How did the time compare historically? The 31 lengths is a misnomer if the other horses were just terrible.
Still the greatest race any horse has ever ran. The first time I watched this, I literally had goosebumps.
Upon Secretariat’s death an autopsy was performed, and it was determined that his heart was over twice as big as your average racing horse. A typical racing horse has a heart weighing roughly 9 pounds, and Secretariat’s heart weighed a whopping 22 pounds. He truly was a one of a kind freak of nature, and maybe one we’ll never see the likes of again.
Yeah, and they totally messed up on casting for the Secretariat movie. ‘Shoulda gotten more than that 90’s has-been for the role of the greatest horse ever, that’s for sure.
I watched this race as a kid in 1973. It was considered a real big deal, because the last horse to win the triple crown did it 25 years before. That race was one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
My dad and I were just talking about this last night. In his opinion Secretariat is clearly the best race horse of all time but the Kentucky Derby yesterday was the best horse race ever. And seeing the above shot of them turning into the home stretch it’s hard to disagree!
greatest athlete of all time
I dunno, its just not as impressive when you find out his heart was like what, twice as big as everyone elses? Its like an adult racing a kid.
You can downvote all you want but a v8 vs a v8 is better than a v8 vs a v6.
secretariat was impressive, but it was because of genetics not because he worked hard.
Didn’t realize Craig Ferguson’s old comedy partner had a sports career.
Later, he would kill himself after getting caught betting on his own races and getting a his titles taken.

huge bojack horseman fan, didnt know this secretariat horse was real
Lmao at the PFP
Who’s that at the door?
That’s the most dominant horse race especially in a triple crown race that you’ll ever see most likely ever. Still we were graced with within a few years 2 Triple Crown winners in American Pharaoh (2015) and Justify (2018). Still the 70’s had 3 in Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978)
“He is moving like a tremendous machine!”
Always loved that line
I know that name from Bojack Horseman! So this is what it’s based on!
In my opinion, the single most athletically dominating performance of all time. Not even a second place.
Which ones Secretariat?
