“Amatuer astronomer” I would call John Dobson anything but amateur. I had a 12″ dob. That SoB weighed almost a 100 pounds assembles, but the views were incredible.
There were, maybe still are, some great sidewalk astronomers in New Haven, CT. I don’t recall their actual names but it was this dude, his son, and sometimes another guy. They would set up on Broadway every now and then and let you look at the moon, Saturn, the Sun (via filter) etc. They were amazing. My phone background is still a pic of the moon I took through their telescope using an iPhone 6s. So cool! I moved away from CT so I’m not sure if it’s still a thing.
I gotta be honest, I thought this was gonna be some kinda prank video. But this is truly wholesome. If only people in general stop to take in the cosmos once in awhile and be reminded of the insignificance of all our petty problems..maybe we can gain some kind of perspective that we’re all in this together.
My late grandmother had never seen the moon through a telescope. I set it up and invited her over for dinner a couple years back. Surprised her with an absolutely amazing view of the moon, jupiter, and mars!
The joy in eyes as we shared that moment together, I will never forget!
Always brings smile tears to me when I get the chance to talk about it and share that experience! Thanks op!
John Dobson invented the dobsonian telescope mount (the type his is on) which is a simple way to support large telescopes. Saw him speak at several events and met him once. Great guy! Kinda strange seeing him called an “amateur”…
This is what it means to be human . Take notes people
Is this the dude that actually invented the dobsonian?
reminds me of this video: https://youtu.be/XCrJ3NflOpE
I need to see what they are seeing!!!
