A very controversial game at the time of its release. So controversial the pope wanted it banned. The controversy caused it to be banned in Brazil and censored pretty much all around the world. In Portugal and Australia it was sold uncensored at time of release. 1997.

I loved this game. Had no idea it was banned in other countries, mind you I was a kid so probably didn’t care.
I remember in the UK all the pedestrians were changed to zombies with green blood.
Also this game got me into metal music. It used to have have the music on the CD and if you skipped track one the rest could be played on a CD player.
Still works on Windows 11… just sayin’
The sound track was excellent.
Portugal Caralho.
Hahahaha this was absolutely notorious.
Fuckin’ Carmageddon! I spent countless hours playing this for years and I still have it on my phone (yes, it’s available on Android too). I went through the game winning in every possible way – truly finishing the race (which is the most boring), crashing your opponents and, the most fun one, killing every pedestrian on the map. Fear Factory provided a pitch-perfect industrial metal soundtrack! IMHO, the level of fun this game had is really hard to achieve.
*Handbreak and slide – splat a pedestrian against a wall – get “EXTRA STYLE” bonus points!*
Carmageddon 2 was not as fun, although it had a great (Iron Maiden) soundtrack to it.
P.S. – The game was inspired by a cult movie “Death Race 2000” (featuring Sylvester Stallone).
Come and get it
Absolutely adore Carmageddon. I play it on a special Voodoo card paired with a matrox. Great, great stuff. Thanks for the memories.
I was expecting Postal 2, gosh I forgot all about this game
It was awesome, glad I was in Portugal to fully enjoy it
Ganda Frosty! Até fala estrangeiro este gajo!
I remember finding Carmageddon 2 in the local bookstore of all places. My dad reads a lot so I came with him when he was browsing. I remember breaking the cellophane slightly scratching off the 16 and over sticker and handing it to my dad: look a cool racing game! And I enjoyed every minute of the game even though I never finished it because I sucked at games when I was little hahaha
Ah I remember this one.
CUNNING STUNT!
This was one of my favorite games. Great stress reliever. 😁
Moooo. Splat! …CHECKPOINT!!!
I know this is about the game; however, hearing Zero Signal (Fear Factory – Demanufactured) is a HUGE nostalgic hit. This album is in my personal top 5 most influential albums for me / my life. My girlfriend got me a personal birthday video message from Burton C Bell for my last birthday. She gave it to me while we were at the airport on our way to my birthday weekend shenanigans. I was literally sitting in the middle of a crowded airport “cutting onions.”
It was perfect therapy. The satisfaction of killing someone without actually killing someone
Still a great game. There’s android port which is equally awesome.
And they still haven’t learned that, if you want to ensure as many people as possible read/watch/play the media piece, ban it. 😀
Really? Hilarious. I live in Canada and never knew of any of this at the time, but then the group of people I hung out with then also never paid for any software, which means I didn’t either.
Ah yes, good memories…
Does anyone else suddenly feel old? 😉
Best. Game. EVER. When I first got it I kept trying to finish the race and would time out every time till I realized I needed to kill the peds to get more time. Then of course I realized it was far easier to destroy all the opponents to win.
What a year for games: Carmageddon, The Curse of Monkey Island, Blade Runner, Goldeneye, Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey, Jedi Knight, Fallout, GTA, Dungeon Keeper, and many more. Oh and… Postal.
Was this the game where you drove through a stadium packed with fans and did some kind of electrocution type deal and got like 20,000 kills all at once?
My favorite from the 90’s. Still fun to play too!
Yes I remeber the hyperbole that was created with it, their excuse to ban it was that they would be desensitized and in reality you would run over pedestrians.
Great game
The thing about it was that it was an exceptionally fun and well-done ‘open world’ driving action game before GPU accelerators were a thing. Talk about optimization!
That 3DFx logo… love it
Loved this game!!! A buddy of mine who worked at a video game store gave me a copy. 100 levels of pure carnage!!
