We made this game called “Orbles” in 3 days for Ludum Dare 50.
We love Settlers 2 and wanted to see more games with the same logistic mechanics, so we took a stab at it. It needs more refinment, but the base is kind of cool 😀
Deep production chains had no place in the jam, but that’s definitely something we’d like to add.
I still play Settlers 2 on DosBox, and Seekers 2 10th Anniversary Edition. Out of all games Settlers 2 has been one game I’ve never been able to put down for long.
Something I loved about The Settlers wasn’t just the production chains but seeing the Settler’s actually carry their resources around. Something I feel too many games like to mask by having generic ‘items’ like boxes concealing the goods. The other thing modern gaming likes to do as well is rather than having a production cycle, for example where a villager takes a log and carves it into planks, you just make a building which “every 30 seconds produces a +1 plank”. As opposed to watching a villager take the log, go to their workstation, work on the object, then place the object down. It’s more real-worldy.
I never played Settlers or anything like this. Needless to say, the first 5 runs were infuriating.
At round 6, I stumbled across a crucial early game mechanic – Gatherer/Temple reduction. By then I also understood 2 houses to a farm was most optimal, as well as how to position them.
At round 8, I realized it was even more optimal to delete every building save for the first farm to optimize pathing.
At round 9, I settled in to beat it as any further optimization wouldn’t make a significant difference.

You don’t need to handhold, but you may want to explain certain functions more explicitly if you intend to grab a larger audience.
Settlers was a great game!
