I just lost a bit of respect for TR, but we all need to remember he was a product of his time. Poor elephant.
He was a product of his time. He eventually had an epiphany after killing an American Buffalo. That lead him to being a conservationist later in life.
I bet he wanted to do the same to Taft and would have posed for the picture.

Killing an elephant with a rifle does not seem overly badass to me.
Seems moer like being a dick.
Hunting for sport always weirds me out. Admittedly, I’d be impressed if someone took down an elephant or a lion with their bare hands. But to stand over an animal with a gun??? Doesn’t seem very badass to me.
