Now, are they talking purely the open world and what you can do in it or the game as a whole (story, characters included) if the latter, GTA V is way too high up the list
I’ve just finished elden ring hours ago. It’s not as big and detailed as tw3 + dlc where it really was an organic world but it’s much richier than zelda. I think there’s a strong bias here. Phantom pain is also a weird choice :
I love Marvel’s Spider-Man (both games) and Miles is my fav spidey boy but I don’t think it’s one of the best open worlds out there tbh. HZF would we be way higher for me because honestly I’m a sucker for this game. I think BOTW deserves the first spot, there’s so much freedom in this game in a way that it really feels like an open world.
Btw I wouldn’t take this too personal, top rankings will never please everyone cos at the end of the day it all depends on what you’re looking for in a game.
At the end if the day, these are opinions. All great maps on this list, but I gotta say, Elden Ring’s open world gives me the same sense of awe and wonder that I felt when playing BoTW for the first time. Those are my top 2 for sure.
I know this is just subjective but Skyrim was a really important game that pushed the genre forward and laid the ground for many others in this list. I think that deserves a bit more credit.
Honestly I feel like RDR2 is the best on this list, but regardless of that, it’s absolutely better than GTA V and I can’t imagine how anyone can think differently. RDR2 actually felt alive and relying on traversal with your horse made the entire world feel more grounded and accessible.
I just started Horizon Forbidden West last night, so I have no idea how big the map is. So seeing it on the list makes me excited to really get into it, I only finished the tutorial level.
The mission variety is absymal and you spend way to much time just driving around. Although the map is large and varied, you have little reason to explore it.
Buying properties doesn’t add anything other than very basic missions, and a lot of properties are possible to buy only once you’ve completed the game, and at that point they don’t add anything. It’s also very hard to actually earn enough to buy the most expensive stuff.
Despite the map being large and fairly good, there just isn’t much to do outside of the campaign and basic missions.
Comparing GTA5 with, for example, BotW, I’d argue that the former have fuck all to do on that list.
Hard disagree with Spiderman being on this list, like the games fine but it’s open world is just standard at best, even Mad Max has more going on with its open world.
I know people seem to hate more recent AC games, but Odyssey still has one of the best open worlds of any game I’ve ever played. It’s massive and yet still packed with shit to do everywhere.
I personally disagree with this ranking
Phantom pain looks out of place on this list.

who gives a shit about what IGN thinks? They suck at rating games.

I *L O V E* BotW, but I honestly don’t think it deserves the number one spot
ESIV:Oblivion could eat Metal Gear 5 and still not be full.
Safe to say everyone here has differing opinions.

Feels like some favorite games mixed with some newer games that left a great impression on who made the list.
As an example, Miles Morales being chosen instead of the original Spider-Man.
Gta v beats rdr, skyrim & fallout in what world?

Μy question is why miles morales and not spiderman? I remember spending more time in spiderman than miles morales
BotW is a good game, but really #1?
Miles Morales? It’s a 4-6 hour game that feels more like an expansion of the original, how’d that crack the top 10?
Miles Morales shouldn’t be there just for the simple reason that the one before should be at least in front of it.
I wish BOTW had better dungeons. Hope they fix that with the next game.

So if we considering Miles Morale to be open-world then you tryna tell me it beat out Arkham City??
IGN is so bad lol. 2 of the top 10 of all time came out in the past month? And Spider Man PS4’s short expansion pack is better than the full game?
I know this is just subjective but Skyrim was a really important game that pushed the genre forward and laid the ground for many others in this list. I think that deserves a bit more credit.
No love for Arkham city? I would definitely put it above Spider-man.
Have they never played Ghost of Tsushima?
Who chose Miles Morales instead of the main game. MM is more like a DLC than a full game.
Fake news where’s Minecraft
It tickles me that F:NV is still on this list all these years later. Such a fantastic game.
Elden ring has been out for 2 weeks now lmao. Crazy the impact it’s had on people in such a short time.
What about dayz
OG Deux Ex was pretty darn revolutionary for its time and still holds up pretty well.
The fact that ghost of Tsushima is not on this list is fucking criminal.
They did Skyrim dirty

So much recency bias on this list
I can tell these lads has never played lego lord of the rings before
I think Skyrim should be replaced with oblivion.

How is gta 5 a better open world game than red dead
I can’t believe minecraft isn’t on there, it’s got the openest world of them all
What a shit list.
Reads like Recency Bias: The List (plus FNV to try to try to avoid people flaming me about all the games being from the past half decade)
Valheim just got done dirty.
Unpopular opinion. Breath of the Wild isn’t even the best Zelda game, let alone the Best Game!
Can’t spell ignorant without ign!
No one going to mention how Metal Gear has made it up? That game was a whole lot of emptiness. Also I know its new but Elden Ring should be higher imo
Hot take, GTA5 isn’t all that great.
