For nearly 30 years straight (1986-2014), Darlene Love would appear on Letterman every year to perform her 1963 Christmas hit, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). Here she is performing it for the first time in 1986. If anyone deserves the Queen of Christmas title, it’s Darlene.

my favorite Christmas song ever
Letterman is the shit
So rad.
Such a timeless treasure!
What a voice. Awesome band as well.
Blowin’ the roof off that dump, as Dave would say….
Actually saw that live in 2006. Got really good seats. A total highlight of my NY trip.
What an amazing voice with an amazing song. I definitely don’t understand how Mariah Carey’s song became “the song” instead of this.
“Hey gang! You’re rolling with Rockin’ Ricky Rialto, the voice of Kingston Falls, USA!”
Is it weird I can name everybody in the band just off the top of my head? Aww back when late night was good.
The very definition of “Old School Cool”.
The good old days when you needed to actually have talent and not just flashy sets or outfits
One of my favorite albums with her is Introducing Darlene Love. It’s awesome!
Did she also sing the home alone 2 song Nobody wants to be alone on Christmas? I’ll have to Google.
Wow what an amazing voice!
I love U2’s version as well. Don’t hate me.
She STILL does Xmas shows that are amazing. She’s doing them this year in NY, NJ, PA. SO worth seeing…
I grew up on DL in the 80s. Stayed up way too late in high school but it was too much fun to miss. He shoulda had the 11:30 slot cuz Cason/Lenno were not as good. Anyway, one think I wanna say is he has a big heart. Carol King was another of his favs that I discovered cause of him.
I also liked her 2018 Christmas song from Saturday Night Live.
Lady has some pipes!
Those backing vocals are so effing good for how effing bad they could have gone in that setting. One-off tv gigs are hard they say.
If you haven’t seen it go watch 20 Feet from Stardom, I gained so much more respect for her once I heard her story
I play one of her later versions every year on Christmas Eve before I go to bed. I usually get misty eyed each time.
One of many gems from the Phil Spector Christmas album.
It’s not Christmas until I hear Darlene.
God how I wish this could replace Mariah’s song
After all these years… ALL THIS TIME… And the amount of times I’ve heard this over the years, I had no idea it was by Darlene Love.
Having watched Lethal Weapon a billion times, I knew Darlene Love was a singer, but never knew this was her song.
Murtaugh: too old for this shit
Mrs Murtaugh: timless
Will and Anton are digging it!
“The song from The Gremlins opening credits” is how I would search for this one because I’m stupid and old.
Paul is absolutely loving this performance. Bro is getting *down* back there.
My favorite Christmas tradition and song. The last Letterman performance is a treat too and she’s still got it. She still performs each year on The View since Letterman ended, which is way lamer but at least Darlene is still bringing Christmas joy each year. I would love for Dave to come out and join as a surprise guest instead of Jason DeRulo or whatever.
A very young Cher sang background vocals on the original recording. This year Cher released her first Christmas album. On it she sings this song with Darlene Love. It’s just as good and great to hear them together.
She was also Murtaugh’s wife on the Lethal Weapon franchise movies. 👑
What a great performance! And props to bass man for not only singing backup but tuning his low E string in the middle of the song.
A few years ago I hadn’t been home for Christmas in 3-4 years. I drove from Oregon and this song came on as I was getting into Phoenix. Brings tears to my eyes remembering how happy I was knowing I was coming home.
My favorite Christmas song.
The shitter was full!

She has the kind of voice that’s so perfect it’s hard to imagine it coming from a real person.
Also, as a total aside, I *love* that set. The carpet, the openness, the simplicity. Fantastic. It really makes everyone up there stand out.
My all time favorite Christmas song.
I watched her perform this song every single year she did it. She said she would never perform this song on a talk show again as tribute to Dave. And she has stood by it.
Mrs. Murtaugh?!
I was at the Letterman taping of his last Christmas special! The 2014 one, and got to see her perform this song! I didn’t quite realize it at the time, but it was a really special moment I’ll never forget.

Watch 1:37, bass player tuning his bass mid play
Goodfellas!!! Jimmy goes nuts when everyone is buying new gear!!!
Sometimes I forget what music can do, but every once in a while, something like this comes around to remind me.
Every year when the Christmas season comes around, all people talk about is Mariah Carey and how great the most overplayed song on the planet is. Sorry Mariah, Darlene will always be on top in my book.
I believe it was Letterman himself who referred to Darlene Love as the Queen of Christmas…. Long before the Mariah crap
