My favorite thing about this is that in 1972 “Mountain Movie” was considered a category of cinema.
Canada Johnson…..where Beaver is as big as Bobcat

Wish there were more flicks like this! love this movie
Skin that one pilgrim and I’ll bring you another
It still is the best.
I only wish I had the perfect gif to post to capture my reaction to this post. Oh well, time to delete my account
“There are a lot of Western movies, but this is the only one really about The West.” – some movie guy
The cinematography on this movie is phenomenal.
One of my favorite movies to watch. May not be the greatest story ever, but it’s a joy to watch. Final scene with Bear Claw is great too.
Grizzly Adams did have a beard.
Grizzly’s like, “Damn, that human sure is handsome!”
It’s not a purse. It’s a European carry-all!
In 2023 it’s STILL the best mountain man movie ever
Redford is on the right?
I was recently at the Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company in Whitefish, MT. So I got that going for me, which is nice.
Sold my four wheeler last year to a guy named Jeremiah Johnson. I said bullshit your name ain’t no Jeremiah Johnson. Pulls out his drivers license. Sure enough
One of my favourite films. I’ve got a replica of his rifle the Hakwen 50 caliber percussion cap rifle. Really fun to shoot big bang, lots of smoke. I want to get coat like that to wear when I’m shooting it lol.
The Hawken Brothers made them in St’ Louis Missouri from the early 1820s to the mid 1800s. Like Jermiah Johnson in the film, many frontiersmen stopped at their shop on the way out west.
My God I love this movie, but it is so sad.
I’ve seen this movie over a dozen times and it never gets old. Definitely my all-time favorite flick.
ALL good movies is already made, same with music
Elk don’t know how many feet a horse have!
Thought it was Guy on a Buffalo for a sec and got excited.
Watch your top knot.
The bear is thinking “This dude is wearing my sister !”
And that’s not CGI either, that’s a real man!
Skin that one Pilgrim

Honorable mention
The original Rambo… before the other actor with an Italian name jumped into the game.

This, and Little Big Man (and, later, Unforgiven) are probably my favourite Westerns.
This movie made quite an impression on my young self. I did not hunt growing up. In my mid 30’s I moved from suburbia to a more rural location and decided it was time to try deer hunting. I applied for and got wilderness tags where you were required to hike in and hike out, (5 miles to the border of the wilderness boundary) no driving to camp or shooting from the roadside. I always referred to this as my “Jeremiah Johnson hunt.”
>I ain’t never seen ’em, but my common sense tells me the Andes is foothills, and the Alps is for children to climb! Keep good care of your hair! These here is God’s finest scupturings! And there ain’t no laws for the brave ones! And there ain’t no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain’t no churches, except for this right here! And there ain’t no priests excepting the birds. By God, I are a mountain man, and I’ll live ’til an arrow or a bullet finds me. And then I’ll leave my bones on this great map of the magnificent…
When they relocated the real Jeremiah Johnson’s grave to Cody Wyoming Redford paid and was a pallbearer had the reburial.
“why’s this dude’s coat smell like my mom though”

I worked w RR a few years ago. “Jeremiah Johnson” is his favorite film as well. I “happened” to bring my original one sheet with me. He remains always kind and good looking.

2023 and it’s still the best
Some say he’s still up there.
I love this film and Robert Redford is great as Jeremiah
Here’s some movie trivia. This particular bear was known to be difficult to work with, but he agreed to do the movie just to get Robert Redford’s autograph, and to get a picture with him, to show his kids.
“Best mountain movie ever?”
Was there a crowded field of competitors? *Alive* was still 21 years away.

(Nods in Mountain Man)
I always thought Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Who knew.
Based on a real guy called Liver Eating Johnson. Who had a fued going with Crow tribe and used to eat the livers of the ones he killed.
He was captured by them and held in a tepee but managed to overcome the guard. He killed the guard and cut the poor chaps leg off and ,because he knew he had a long walk home through snow, took the leg with him to eat on the way.
That was before Brokeback seized the Mountain Crown.
I love this movie!
So what are the other mountain movies it beat out?
🤔
