I’m not sure how but this shit reappeared on my phone recently and sent me into murder mode. I didn’t hate the band before this and now I don’t even want to listen to the songs I did like.
It’s too bad this stunt ruined any chance the album had of good-faith discourse. The album is probably their best post-2000, but all anyone ever remembers is how it was put on their phone for free without their consent.
>Bono, whilst playing a gig in Glasgow, got the whole crowd to be silent and then began slowly clapping his hands. He got the crowd to clap along for a while, the stadium quiet except for the rhythmic clapping…
After a short period Bono spoke, saying that everytime he clapped his hands a child in Africa died …
Suddenly, from the front row of the venue a voice broke out in thick Scottish brogue, ending the silence as it echoed across the crowd, the voice cried out to Bono “Well stop ****ing doing it then!!”
A 72 year old coworker of my wife was complaining to her about naked people on her iPhone. Turns out that it was the U2 album artwork popping up on the screen.
It was like coming home to find a new album stuck in your home entertainment center, with no explanation except a sticky note saying “Here. For you.” And you just want to know who got in and which window is broken.
It seemed strange to me that almost all of the ire was directed at U2 rather than Apple, which paid U2 a substantial amount for the album and chose to add it to everyone’s iTunes account rather than simply offering it as a free purchase through the iTunes Store. Now, I do understand that Bono is a much easier target than Tim Cook. But U2 only provided the content, whereas Apple made the key decisions about the method of that content’s release.
Fuck U2, fuck Bono, fuck this shitty album, and the shittier albums that preceded it. No one asked for this, but it clearly demonstrated how out of touch and irrelevant the band is—if you are so out of touch with the public and reality what do you have to meaningfully contribute to art? It baffles me that they still continue to sell tickets.
Had an iPhone when that album dropped. It was ok. Sounded good until Bono started singing in every song.like a free album from a major band is cool but this wasn’t that good.
for me, it was less about u2 and more about apple’s stingy control around storage. if i had i had the ability to add storage via a micro-sd card, no problem.
I just remember how smug Tim Cook sounded when he announced it as if we’d all be just so delighted to have a U2 album dumped on our phones without our permission. Someone should have found his house and dumped a few tons of manure at the gate as a gesture of reciprocity.
What I find strange is I have never experienced any of the issues I see everyone post. Yes, it’s in my Apple Music library. But I’ve never actually listened to it, nor has it ever started playing by itself.
The ironic thing is I like U2, but haven’t listened to much beyond no line on the horizon. I even have the film they released if that album was purchased on iTunes.
Isn’t this more on Apple than U2? Yes, U2 signed up for it, but Apple shares in the blame.
It kind of reminds me of people bitching about green bubbles when texting Android users from an iPhone. Who designed the green bubbles in iOS, and who refuses to support cross platform modern messaging protocols? It’s Apple.
I was working at an Apple Store when this was released, had so many people making appointments because “their phone was hacked.” I was on check-in duty A LOT (making Genius Bar appointments for walk-ins and checking people in for appointments) and I had a MacBook Air at the closest table with a tab open for a tool from Apple to remove specifically that album from your account. Apple knew it was so bad that they made a removal tool for that specific album. https://itunes.com/soi-remove. Don’t know if it still works.
I’ve never had any interest in iTunes or post-90s U2, but I’m still genuinely surprised I never heard about this.

I really enjoyed the album.
Speaking of U2. How do I uninstall Microsoft Edge from my PC?

U talkin’ u2 to me podcast goes into detail about this, and it’s pretty entertaining as long as you’re ok with two dumbshits jerking off to u2.

I was using an iphone back then.and was so furious that it kept downloading itself after i removed it
“Bono my storage is gone”
Oh, wait, they mean Bono from U2

People overreacted so hard to this shit
Like who cares? Jesus

It took me from not caring about U2, to hating U2.

What a privileged whine fest.
I’m just glad the Chance the Rapper free album plays before the U2 one when it comes to autoplay

What a dumb idea.
Loved that U2 Martin Garrix song that one time
