Leaning out like that is the right way to do it. That way the climbing spurs go into the pole at an angle. The closer the knees get to the pole the more likely the spurs are to kick out.
Takes a while to get used to it because it “feels wrong”.
My brother, nephew, 2 cousins, uncle, best friend, and his dad are/were all linemen. I swear, taking a picture like this is a prerequisite to being a lineman. I’ve seen dozens of em, and they are all awesome.

My uncle was a lineman. Died when a helicopter crashed into the power line he was working on (doing the big ones out west). Bottom left guy looks kinda like him. Ask your dad if he knew a Johnny
Granted started long before there was a “class”. They just handed him a harness and asked his boot size so they could call dibs when he fell and died…. Spoiler – he never died. But I guess he did fall and get shocked on countless occasions.
Love it. Look Ma, no hands.
*I am a lineman for the county . . .*

Daddy climbs a pole so Mommy doesn’t have to.
