What was that time when you thought we’ve reached peak console graphics and wouldn’t get better?

The start of the 360/PS3 era for me. I remember my Mom getting me Perfect Dark Zero and PGR3 and thinking “This is it! It can’t get any better than this!”
Probably several times as a kid going from NES > SNES > N64 > PS2 and Gamecube, etc.
But that I specifically remember, GTA V. I couldn’t believe that such a game could run on the Xbox 360.
I was 8 years when i played Max payen 1 and i liked his face graphics a lot 🦧
Just a few years ago I remember thinking “You know, graphics have come a long way, but the day gameplay looks like those CGI cutscenes from Final Fantasy X, I’ll be impressed.”
Then, not having seen them in like 15 years, I went to go watch one on youtube…
I was reliving my early gaming memories with my retroid pocket 2s and downloaded all my faves from that era.
One of those games was Apocalypse which is a run and gun shooter starring Bruce Willis lol, at the time it was like holy shit its Bruce Fucking Willis! He was like the most awesome action star to me, and having a game starring him was the cherry on top.
And I used to think “man graphics couldn’t get better, this is like the most detailed graphics human can achieve” then those levels with full fmvs on those billboard ads while you were killing bad guys!
Also happened with crash bandicoot 3, on those water levels, I used to think that graphics couldn’t get better at the time.
Boy was I so wrong.
Genuinely the PC port of Ecco the Dolphin. I am both old and stupid.
N64 concers bad fur day
Final Fantasy X on PS2, that game’s graphics for the era was unbelievable
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and really any Assassin’s Creed game. Also, No Man’s Sky is awe inspiring.
Unreal Tournament. That game looked so good, even playing it on my dads Compaq presario windowed at 800×600
Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. Now I’m playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and I’m just blown away at all the minor details this game has.
Assassin’s Creed. I remember bring friends over just to show them it.
I remember my mum watching me play Gran Turismo 3 and saying how realistic the graphics looked. So that, I guess.
GTA Vice City, driving through the city at sunset, with HELLRAISE blasting in the radio. I was just speechless.
Not console, but I thought Half Life 2 was peak performance when I got it on PC
I definitely thought that when Battlefield 3 came out, but I’ve since learned that graphics evolve so much all the time that we’ll probably never reach peak (although Arkham Knight comes close imo)
Lol Metal Gear Solid 2. I remember my whole family piled up around the tv in awwe
Final Fantasy X
I remember playing Medal of Honor and during the D Day landing thinking we’ve peaked. My mom would come in and think I was watching a movie lol.
PS2
Pretty much any prerendered cutscene in the 90s.
“Some day, the gameplay will look like this!”
We kind of just skipped over that in some ways.
The original Mortal Kombat on SNES.
I don’t know if it was that CRTs naturally blurred everything so higher resolution wouldn’t have mattered or if it was just a total lack of imagination, but I remember thinking the game looked more or less as realistic as a game possibly could and that this was as far as graphics could possibly advance.
Not graphics but technology: L.A. Noire
I previously thought the year [2002](https://youtu.be/D53LtjzJMU4) was when graphic design peaked.
But then [2023 happened.](https://youtu.be/-hzckrKDX5A)
Metal gear solid. I’m old.
Resident Evil on the GameCube.
GTA 3, from 2d to 3d. I could not believe the progress they made.
Tbh. Crysis.
By that time it seemed hard to get better.
MGS2, especially the intro. I was like “holy shit that’s not pre-rendered? Game consoles can do this now?”
Seen a lot of FFX answers, but child me distinctly remembers the CGI scenes from FF8 to be mind-blowing. The intro was incredible, and even the character models were such a huge upgrade from FF7 I didn’t think it could get any better.
I’m surprised that Wind Waker even after like 22 years still looks like it didn’t age a day
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory running on Xbox
TES IV: Oblivion, the first time I played it I spent so much time just wandering the wilderness thinking about how stunning everything looked
Never but I still say the jump from SNES and Sega Genesis tonPSX and N64 was the biggest jump we have ever seen in video game technology.
The ways we played games changed.
Quite recently with rdr2, it’s not getting prettier than that sorry, you can have fidelity but that game has that and a nice artstyle
Probably when I came home after years of SNES and fired up FF7 on PS1 for the first time, and saw a CGI cut scene.
I dreamed about a photorealistic Final Fantasy where they can swear and actually kill people, and well – we got it this summer.
It’s really interesting to think about what people will think about 2023 graphics when it’s 2033, I mean how much more realistic can it get? Unreal Engine 5.2 is already a literal universe simulator with defined teeth and skeletons.
