Shown to the left are Elvis’ father, Vernon, and center, Elvis’ widow, Priscilla. To the far right is hotel owner Barron Hilton, (the grandfather to Paris Hilton). The unveiling was at the end of the “Always Elvis Convention,” from September 1-10, 1977, presented by ‘Colonel‘ Tom Parker and Elvis’ father. On September 8, 1978, about a year following the death of Elvis, the statue by sculptor Carl Romanelli was unveiled.
The Las Vegas Hilton Hotel was the location of more than 600 shows over a seven-year period, from 1969-1976, before an estimated 2.5 people. The building was originally known as The International Hotel, before being renamed The Las Vegas Hilton. The statue was initially installed by the hotel entrance. When the property was sold to David Siegel, the founder of Westgate Resorts, the statue was moved to the lobby of the newly-named Westgate Casino.
