What are some of the worst things added to video games (outside of dlc/loot boxes)?

I’ll go first… inventory/weight management. That shit sucks. I want to play the game, not become a personal logistics manager.

  • Weapon durability.

Hunger/thirst meters, survival mechanics in general.

    QTE’s.

Forced stealth/driving sections (in action games).

Linear RPG mechanics in action games. That is, RPG skill trees and systems based on gatekeeping progress rather than meaningful build choice.

  • >inventory/weight management

You’re going to hate STALKER 2. Inventory and resource management is crucial to your survival. The series as a whole keeps you in check and has no issue making you feel like a worthless nobody within the zone REGARDLESS of what gear you may have.

  • Not being able to pause during cutscenes.

With a year old baby boy and missus that’s got a big gob on her it’s almost vital ha ha.

But jokes aside one of the first things I check on a game is if I can pause during a cutscene. Nothing worse than dying for a piss or you drop a beer on the floor when there’s vital story going off.

I suppose this isn’t something added though, rather something omitted.

  • The piss yellow sepia filter that plagued the 7th gen era of consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii). God forbid your game had a shade of purple in it. Resistance, Gears of War and RE5 are blatant of offenders of this, the latter of which even has a mod to remove the piss yellow to reveal the games literal true colours.

  • * Digital only games with DRM that can’t be preserved
    * The awful incomplete state games launch in and have their fixes and missing content patched in later
    * Scarcity of LAN multiplayer (and to some extend couch multiplayer)
    * Bloated open worlds with a lot of boring side activities
    * Multiplayer achievements (especially when the servers go down for good)
    * Achievements that are really hard to get or are very time consuming (let the community handle the very hard stuff like speedruns and iron man runs in difficult games)
    * Ads in games that aren’t free
    * Pay2Win mechanics
    * Region locks (thankfully this is almost gone)
    * “Physical” games that don’t have physical media but a download code
    * Locking non-cosmetics behind a progression system in online multiplayer
    * Locking backing up saves to a paid cloud service (Switch)
    * ELO ranking system in team games

  • Not really a thing “added” to games but I detest the live service model every game wants to adhere too in an effort to rake in as much cash as possible. I grew up playing call of duty with my father and seeing where that franchise has gone is frankly depressing.

Gaming devs now seem to add gameplay mechanics/changes no one asked for and are generally surprised when they don’t get the response they want and then (sometimes) sheepishly backpedal after a horrendous launch.

The bandwagon(ing) is getting ridiculous in this field. By this I mean not every game needs “X” mechanic because “Y” game did it and they made money. Not every game needs to be fortnight would be the best example.

Sorry for the rant just something Iv been thinking about.

  • Missions in single player games that require a NPC to follow you, and if/when they are seen you either fail the mission or are forced to start over. The number of times the I’ve had to restart a mission because an NPC just sticks half their body out in the open or just stands up while I’m sneaking is too high

  • Mandatory connection for single player.

But quick time events are my pick.

Oh? You blinked during cutscene? BAM you’re dead! Have fun replaying from last save.

Witcher 2 had some QTEs during cutscene which ended in death if you missed them

  • Internet

Yeah i tend to get downvoted for this Hot take but doesnt care the worst things added to videogames always tracks down to the same origin, internet in videogames

    Microtransactions? Internet
    Lootboxes? Internet
    Overpriced DLC? Internet
    Ads in videogames? Internet
    Cloud gaming? Internet
Mandatory internet connection for single player games? What isnt this one obvious?

Im not ani-internet at all (that would be very stupid) but its integration with videogames did more harm than good
