  • Rather important context to the photo: the nickname of the lunar module on Apollo 10 was Snoopy. (The command module’s nickname was Charlie Brown)

  • Snoopy was quite popular in the late 60’s, and the NASA team nicknamed the Lunar Module: “Snoopy. “ The command module was named: “Charlie Brown.” The May, 1969 mission of Apollo 10 was just prior to the Apollo 11 moon landing mission. May of 2019 was the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 10 flight and was widely covered at the time.

This picture depicts the Commander Tom Stafford patting the stuffed Snoopy as held by Jayme Flowers, who was astronaut Gordon Cooper’s secretary.

  • To the moon and back to test the LM in lunar orbit and down to the descent point. Like Apollo 8 it was a dress rehearsal for the big show in July. Apollo 10 set the record for the highest speed attained by a crewed vehicle: 39,897 km/h (11.08 km/s or 24,791 mph) on May 26, 1969, during the return from the Moon.

  • Both my father and father-in-law have received the silver snoopy award, which is given by NASA to people who have a strong contribution to mission safety and success. So NASA seems to really like snoopy
