That’s a solid run. Good thing it is easy to fix!
I think it can be changed, no idea if it will revive your save game, though.
I lost my 151 on yellow the same way… sad days 🙁
RIP o7 That blastoise will live on in your memory, at least.
I’m afraid to check mine…
If I don’t check then I’ll still have them all, right??
I lost my surf Pikachu (Nintendo event like 23 years ago in a theme park) save in my Yellow edition a couple of years ago, that thing was hard to digest. I feel you bruh, your Blastoise might be gone but never forgotten.
Condolences
What this means? The game can’t save?
For anyone else you can back up your save to a PC check the voltage of the battery and if it is lower than 2V replace then put the save back on the cartridge
This happened to my Pokemon Silver a few years back and I was devastated 😭
Wait.. what
Good night sweet water turtle.
Oh wow. 25 years is incredible. As others have said, there’s ways to save your data and keep em. I’d suggest that. I lost my old saves years ago and I still think about it now 10 years on.
If you decide not to/can’t, then you have my condolences. If you can, I think there’s a way that you can dump the save to pc and run it in an emulator to play on eternally with your beloved Blastoise.
If it’s any consolation, I had a little heart wrench when I read “catch you next time”
If it’s any consolation, I played Bugles on my phone and gave your Blastoise a solid moment of silence. Even took my hat off and stood up.

Classic Red and Blue were so awesome!
Wasn’t Blastoise named Kamex? I think you meant Squirtle
This is your sign to play it again. Make new memories in honor of the old
Mine is still going but I recently got a wee bit of kit so I could backup the save, just to have it. Not sure I’ll ever do anything with it but it’s nice to know my original Charizard lives on.
Sorry for your loss!
bought one of those yellow mega memory cards ~5 years ago; cost me $200 used as there were only 3 (just checked, since couldnt remember name of item, amazon is actually out of stock) but was worth every cent, I routinely backup my files up to 3rd gen after my brother lost 60hrs on a file. We feel for you (and also offer advice)
I won a Mew in a competition when I was about 13/14. It was a write-in competition in one of those unofficial Nintendo magazines. When they wrote to me telling me I’d won, I was ridiculously excited.
I remember I had to send my cartridge in to them. I sent it the day after I got my letter and waited a couple of weeks. I still couldn’t believe it when it came back with a brand new shiny (figure of speech- wasn’t shiny like later gens)Mew on it a couple of weeks later.
Many MANY years later, I turned on my old game boy with my old pokemon yellow in it… no Mew… whole game… wiped. I was unsurprised but still a little disappointed. I’m amazed yours is still charged, and I’m happy for you… but man, I’m disappointed I lost my Mew.
I’ll leave this here: https://youtu.be/XqgmR1Hqvbk
Props on the original gameboy. Seems to be well kept too.
My battery is dead af, wanted to see what 6 year old me was cooking with 🙁 had to buy a bootleg copy
Mine are still going strong. But I have all the saves backed up on multiple hard drives, so once the battery dies I’ll just put in new ones and write the old saves on the RAM again.
I’ve gone though multiple batteries on my Gen 2 games already though
Is there any way to replace the battery in an old game?
I’ve got like 400 hours on my Pokemon Blue cartridge with all 151 caught and nearly all of them level 100. It even has Missingno etc. I’m afraid if I ever turn it back on that my save will be gone. Maybe it already is, it’s been a few years since I’ve checked.
OG Squirtle squad represent!!!
It’s wild to me that people’s Pokémon saves were once kept alive on effectively RAM and a coin-cell battery. Even wilder that it worked so well for so long.
Aww. That seems just so sad. Even if I knew where my game was – I don’t think I would check it because I KNOW this would be the case. Might seem lame as its a game and they are just pixels – but you’ll always have your memories <3
Rip bro 😔
I’m not sure I have the heart to check in on my Venusaur. RIP to your friend.
But, my original Zelda NES cartridge still is holding on as of two weeks ago.
Old game boys are made to last better than most modern systems, fight me.
At the start of May, my kiddo just found my DS and red for the GBA. Played it for like 60 hours and had a 77 Charzard… last week the battery died.
It won’t bring back your Blastoise, but you can replace it with the bit to take the cartridge apart and a new battery. I’m sure there’s a million guides for it
I backed up my 151 Red cart last year after I bought a backup device. One of the best decisions I ever made. Now my original Elite 4 team is sitting in Pokémon Home.
