Was officially called New York International Airport, commonly called Idlewild. Name changed to JFK in late 1963 after the assassination of John F Kennedy.

The facility opened in 1948 as New York International Airport and was commonly known as Idlewild Airport.
Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, the airport was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport as a tribute to the 35th President of the United States.
Bonus tip: that same lobby and board is live at the TWA hotel at JFK. Great chill spot and amazing mid century vibes. Total throwback.
