I just watched the 1951 version “The Thing From Another World.” It had surprisingly good effects and great atmosphere, but they >!spoiler changed the monster in a way that undermined the whole premise of the original short story by making it a plant that can regrow limbs instead of something that takes over other living organisms. It sure made it easier to film, but it also took out the psychological horror. !<
I love how clearly influenced by the original *Alien* teaser this is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFxgr8NTD20
THAT was a scary ass movie
One of my favs.
I grew up in that era but I never saw the actual film until about 10 years ago

If anyone wants to read the short story by John Campbell, I think it is public domain and really good. https://soma.sbcc.edu/users/davega/xNON_ACTIVE_CLASSES/FILMST_118/FILMS/ThingFromAnotherPlanet/Who%20Goes%20There_Book.pdf
Look at that ultra cinematic frame rate.
