I’m really surprised games with similar mechanics aren’t more popular. It’s like a deck based game with real-time combat.
Some games have come close, but I feel like this would break the monotony on a lot of RPGs where you just run the same combo/initiator every single time.
That does feel like an underused combat system. Its a rather elegant way to marry the cerebralness of a card-based game with the action of a pew pew game.
I heard One Step From Eden uses a similar combat system, gonna check it out sometime.
Paradoxically, despite loving this series, I only completed the first. I picked up and dropped the 2 multiple times and didn’t finish 6.
I dunno, the combat system was a blast but there was a lot of grind and wandering around endless overworld zones whilst constantly being assaulted by trivial random battles, as I recall.
One Step from Eden
Probably not the sort of thing you’re looking for, but made me think of [Everhood](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1229380/Everhood/)
Plants vs Zombies
Never seen anyone approach Serenade like this.
You should try rhythm games
There are indie games like this. I don’t remember the name though. They are too hard for me.
Well do I have good news for you
The World Ends With You was close
In case you haven’t yet; you should try cuphead
I’m currently replaying MMBN3 Blue right now and having a blast, couldn’t agree more
Standing here I realize
its been years, I kinda want to play Mega Man Battle Network again when I’m not busy

I’m pretty sure the footage/caotion is from a recent Jordan Fringe video on a Megaman cartoon
I completely forgot this was releasing this year and it was on my Birthday! Smh

Still planning to try 2 again sometime.
There’s the Megaman Starforce games, all 3 of them have similiar combat but with a 3d from behind perspective
I just started playing the legacy collection and yeah, the combat is so much fun. I’m bad at it though.
Also the plot of those games has its charms, mainly because of how well it’s aged.
